why Australia down under and the outbacks

Australia is a very beautiful place to be and a peaceful city they have.Is the country side that's not very popular like the flat lands or the quite side where seldom people or population do not exist.Maybe because of the hot climate and only animals exist that is why they call it outback.The place that I've seen only in TV where people live down under the ground in reality just like ground hogs.It is cool and very down to earth literally.

I live in melbourne Australia and this is one of the big cities and even here in the hot sun it is awfully hot, there are a lot of people who like to live out in the country, there are I guess two types of country, the type that is livable although the hot sun still makes it hard but the real outback is like desert and hot with no water but even here some people do live and as hard as it is I don't think they would live anywhere elese, I guess it is just what you get used to....
