I like on a housing estate, has had its ups and downs but on the whole its an ok place to live, plus wherever you live there is always ups and downs.
Was wondering where the name housing estates came from and why are they called that.... I have no idea and thought it would be an intresting discussion.

I gues that the answer is that what you have is a concentration of houses on an estate, or piece of land. The legal definition of an estate is a piece of land that can have things affixed to it - buildings for one. So I guess that that and houses make a housing estate.

I do not know about housing estates. But we do have plus 55 communities, and senior citizen homes. Is it a place where there are condos or apartments designed for a specific group, like for all seniors, families only, for singles, or couples with no children or pets. Or does it apply to a certain area surrounded by a fence that was built by one contractor and it is sort of a mini=community where you have to go by through a gate? We do have these here in Winnipeg. But I have no idea what they call it.

I think we call them apartment buildings or apartment complexes (kind of depends on if they are in a high rise building or spread out and only 2 or three stories tall)
when they are subsidized housing then they are called, at least around here, Section 8 - don't know why...

I don't know why, either. I'm still trying to figure out why people in Hamilton (where I live) call subdivisions "surveys"... I had never run into that before moving here.

I dunno how does the name come about too even though i'm living in one, myself.. haha =D I guess it's just a plot of land meant for housing?? And in order to save space for my houses, everything is built upwards instead of vertically?? hehe ^_^
MOst houses in singapore are built that way as we have limited space, but in european countries, housing estates are not as commonly seen, for they have large plots of land everywhere ^_^

It is just an idea.Sometimes they name housing estates after the person that owned the land in the first place, like a Lord or something like that.Or the name of the land it always had,or a famous local person.Other than that I have really no idea.xx
