Our human body are built to live on land, so wateres are really dangerous for those who can't swim. I am one of those who can't swim. And everytime I am on a boat, I will be very cautious and keep still. And my caution to waters also lessen the fun on beaches. I try to learn to swim, but fail because of my fear of waters. Can you swim? And at age has you aquired the skill of swimming? What do you think of the importance of learning to swim?

It is one good thing to know how to swim but I don't think it's that important or even necessary. However, if one lives near the beach, river or lake, I do agree that swimming is an important things one has to learn. Imagine living near these bodies of water and you can not enjoy them with your siblings and friends because you don't know how to swim. The invention of floats and other life saving devices somehow reduces the necessity of learning how to swim. Some people their own life jacket when boarding a water vessel.

Yes I believe that it is a very important skill that should be taught to those physically able at a young age.

Hi, Flowfire! It is important to learn how to swim. Because you never know when you may be faced in a situation whre you will have no choice but to learn how to. I can't swim either. And I was thinking about this the other day. Maybe I do need to learn, but it will take me some time to learn. I don't like to go near any heavy waters because of my fear for drowning. At the age of 11 is a great time to learn.

I never know that the age of 11 is a great time to learn. I don't know why parents cares less about this because they made a living mostly by fishery when they were young thus they should know the importance to learn to swim. On the other hand, I might be ashamed to be a fisherman's daughter who can not swim.

I still remember the first time I went to the swimming pool when I fell into the water and was about to be drown. I think I should try to remove such bad impression of swimming.

Hi Flowfire, nice discussion. To me, i can swim, but i have a problem, i can't swim good when i am on the nature water. Meaning rivers, sea, lakes. Because of the fear. I can swim pretty good in the swimming pool, becasue i feel safe when i can use my feet to touch the base of the swimming pool. I think all the fears that i have might be because i was almost drown when i was 8 years old in the nature pool. I am then scare of all the nature waters. But still, i like wakeboarding, i like going to the beaches, so i think knowing how to swim is very important.

I think that it is very important to learn to live. It could save your life someday. I learned to swim when I was very young. As a child there was a pond on our propery and I would swim in it all summer long. That Is how I learned to swim. I pretty much tought myself.

Yes, I can swim and I think swimming is one of the things you need to learn to do in your lifetime, you just don't know when you need it the most and if you're not really banned from doing so, then why not try it? You can try learning by enrolling at a local swimming class session. It would be best to do that and not to learn alone. Good luck!

Hi flowfire...Absolutely!..I think its very important that we all learn to swim. ALthough we live on land, we never know when we may need to know how to swim. We could be on a boat that capsizes or caught in a flood. I think everyone should learn to swim at a young age. It is great exercise and for some people, the only one they can do. Also its nice to be able to enjoy the water and beaches with our friends who do swim. Personally I am a very good swimmer and have been able to swim since I was very young. I love the water and have no fear at all. When I was younger, I swam competitively and took all the courses for a lifeguard. All 4 of my children also were brought up around water and they all love to swim too.

i think that it is an excellent thing to know. i didn't learn until i was a teen and i made sure that my children learned very early. i think you feel more secure around water if you know how to swim and i wanted my kids to have that security. as an adult i can swim but not well and now i have too much fear to tackle learning things like diving.

I learned to swim when I was five. Sure it's important and necessary. I surely do not want to drown if I fall into a body of water that it would be easy to swim out of!

I think swimming is an important skill and it's a very healthy activity. But even if you'll never go near a pool, you might be on a boat or ship that sinks.

Yes it is really important these days to know swimming. I don't know swimming but I am really keen to learn it but I am not able to get descent time to learn. Hope I will learn it soon. At fews occasions I was feeling that hope I could know to swim. When I went Water Kingdom and when I went to some beach location, I realized that swimming is necessary in these days.

Yes it is important that we know how to swim. Here in the Philippines we are surrounded by the body of water so we need to learn to swim for our survival because we experienced a lot of water accidents. I learned to swim when I was studying in college but I can't say I swim well. Sometimes I told my father why he don't teach us to swim when we are younger. Right now I don't if I can still swim because I'm no longer practice swimming anywhere.
