Is it alright to spend money on a book you won't read?

i just bought the twilight series in hardbound for P 3000. the amount is almost half of my one month pay. i already read the e-book, so i won't need to read the books i bought. i just placed it on my bookshelf, unopened, to start my collection. im actually thinking of buying more, to "collect". is this alright? what do you think? should money be spent on books you won't read, just collect? and is this a good investment?

Well you go in to get some books because you think you will read em not only once but more than once. You buy them because you think you will enjoy readin em more number of times. Why would you wanna get a book if you are not goin to read. Its a criminal waste of money!

I think the point of buying books is to read them, but like you said, you have already read the book. Unless you intend to keep the book for the next generation to read, I don't see why you have to "collect" the book. I usually don't buy pocket/story books, I try to ask around if I borrow it and read. Self-help books and other informative books however, I try to find in book sales or if I can't find them and I really need the book, I buy it.

Hi migaypelaez, In my opinion, it is very not alright. You are working but do you need your pay? Is it just a supplement and the money is not that important to you and for your survival? If you are just working for fun or for experience and money is not important, then ignore my post other than that it is your money and go ahead and enjoy what you enjoy. Otherwise, if you need your pay, then it is definitely not alright! Half your monthly pay is a heck of a lot in proportion and spending this amount would need some justification. It would have to be something that you really need or want a lot. Yes you work hard... so an occasional indulgence is ok... but if the money is so huge, keep the indulgences really occasional. You said you have read the ebook version already... so why do you need it? Just to collect it? OMG... and you didn't even bother to open the books... geez... In my opinion, you are better off not buying the books. But since what's done can't be undone, don't brood over it, just get over it and move on. Just don't buy more things you don't need and don't even intend to use! Books - the way you are using or not using them - are NOT an investment. Books are only an investment if you read and absorb the content and use it to better your knowledge or expand your horizon. Or, they can be investment in the literal sense if you can sell them for a profit in future. Unless you are talking about those special manuscripts or special paper, the books you bought will turn yellow and grow spots in a few years and you would have just wasted your money buying books you did not even flip through to only ending up throwing away because you don't want literal book worms crawling. And please, the Twilight series is just a fad, a short craze. The storyline is hardly original though I can understand why it would appeal to some people. You need to understand why you are buying the books. They are definitely not an investment. I can only accept that you like the series so much that you want to keep a copy of the books. Fine, just make sure you keep your indulgences affordable. Any reason I can accept is that you are so grateful for the story that you want to buy the books to reward/support the author. That's perfectly alright too. Just keep things affordable.

Hi again migaypelaez, Phew! I am glad you took it positively. I was a bit worried that my reply will not sound bounce off too well on you. I think you are definitely entitled to your indulgences. My take is just that as long as you set aside enough money for survival and what other responsibilities you have, the rest is yours. Now, what to do with this "rest" of the money? I would definitely encourage saving for a rainy day. In fact, "experts" like to advise you save a portion of your salary every month. Saving 20% would be awesome (hard to accomplish for most people though...). But at the bare minimum, save enough for an "emergency fund" that is the amount of money you will need to survive without changing your standard of living for 6 months. 6 months is the figure given - assuming you can find a new job within this time if you are unfortunately dismissed. If you don't intend to get another job then the emergency fund needs to be more. So what's left is all yours - you can indulge in whatever you fancy, do charity, buy gifts for friends, spend on entertainment, whatever. With the basics covered, you can spend the rest of your money on a clear conscience - yes, even on another Twilight series of books.

Well...sure it's alright. Everyone has stuff they collect..and if you have the money to collect books thats great. I'm sure if you can get the whole twilight series unopened for a good price maybe sometime in the future you can sell for a nice profit, if you'd like. Books can be a really good investment...you could do some studying up on which books would be worth more and stuff like that. But if you aren't interested in collecting books for a profit, and just want to own a ton of books, then you can just buy whichever ones you would be interested in owning :) Good luck!

I love reading and I love books. I reckon some books are works of art. I am talking about limited editions. But if I am not misunderstanding you, the twilight series you bought is not a limited edition. According to my experience, non-limited editions (even hardcover ones) get damaged in few years so I don´t think this kind of books are good as colletor´s items. If you are buying the twilight series as an investment, I would say you probably get old before the value of the books increase in a significant percentage. And by the books will be in a terrible state.

I believe it is good to collect unopened books. Maybe in the future when it is all sold out, you can sell it us a collectible book. Like those collectible comics that are really expensive. But if you don't want to use it as an investment, you can always just keep it in your house and maybe past it on to someone who wants it. Or keep reading it and reading it again so that you can smile every time Edward does something. haha!

It is not necessary that you spend money for only those which you gonna read, some time need is not the only thing that make you buy a book people have hobbies of different things it might possible that you just want to collect book for your hobby. I just want to say that I never able to buy any books I generally borrow from library to read and then return it that might be helpful for me since I can able to read various types of books by giving a small payment. I generally buy second hand books that will cost less.

Hi there migaypelaez! I don't think it is necessary to spend on something that won't be used anyway. I use my money to buy books that I actually read. Maybe, you have the intention to keep the book and keep it also in mint condition. Perhaps one day, it becomes a collector's item. Who knows? It's value will increase years from now. If that is your intention, then, it is a good investment. But if you will just keep it in your shelf to collect dust, then it is definitely not a good investment.

I am not sure. You may end up reading the books later even though you now think you won't. If it's an item you want to collect to maybe sell later on when the value of it is greater, then I would say it's fine to do so. Although I would not risk being in debt because of your spending. Of course if your going to keep it to sell later on dusting the shelf and making sure the book is in continuous good condition may be beneficial. Buying a book cover so as to protect the book might also be a smart move. Here I am giving you ideas to spend more. Of course be careful you don't go over your monthly budget, and otherwise and in any case it's up to you.

Hi, migaypelaez! Welcome to myLot! Since you have alredy read the e-book then you may not need the actual book. But since you are collecting, it is great to add this book to your collection. In the end, you may reap rewards for it. You may be able to give or donate the books to people that are less fortunate. This is more than money can buy. And, you will have a collection that can be passed onto many generations in your family, this is priceless. So, it may seem like you are wasting money by not reading them, but you are not wasting what fortune that you may have by collecting them.

If you're just investing in books, I don't think it's going to earn you much money in the long run. I spend money on books because I know that I'm going to read them. Once I read my books I take them to a used book store and sell them back. Even though I don't get much money back for them, it's at least something.

Remember value is realitive. Collectors know that itspersonal feelings that give the collectible worth I have many signed first edition books that have no collectable value but they mean something to me. And thats whats important.

Yea, "normal" books bought in bookstores are definitely not investment - not even with the author's signature. You get a chance when they are maybe a first print (more for comics?) or in limited circulation. IMO, Twilight will never make it big enough for big profits.

it is okay for me as long as it is one of your favorites. because anytime soon you'll spend sparetime in redaing those books because that's one of your interests. unlike if it is not really in your nerves, you won't even dare touch it. make it as your reference.

Oh definatly!! I have a few writers I love and have every book. SOme times I will even have a hardback AND a paperback copy. If it is someone I love, I HAVE to have the book on my bookshelf. There were a few years in my recent past when I didn't have time to read. But I still bought the latest books that came out by my favorite writers. There are several I haven't read yet. But that's OK, as long as I own them.

I'd say it's a personal choice if you want to buy a book that you won't read. I personally wouldn't, since there are too many that I would like to buy that I would like to read, but that is your choice and you are entitled to spend your money the way that you would like to. If you see it as money well spent, then that is all that matters and if you are making a collection and it is part of what you are collecting, then it must be a sound buy for you. It's a good investment if it is pleasuable to you and something that makes you happy and it doesn't cause you to be short with your money in other ways. Good luck with your collection!

It's okay if you have money and have a good source of income but for those who are just living a mediocre life it won't be. Because they have to keep up with the daily expenses from their daily needs. Though it's not a good idea, at present, for those who are less privileged you can still use them in the future. You can sell them if you want. Collect them is also good. It gives you a sense of fulfillment. You might also wanna read them in the future even if you've done reading them.

Books in general don't strike me as a great "investment." By the time they may be worth something, you will probably be long gone and there is no way to tell at the time what is going to be a fad and what isn't. But, it's your decision. I personally wouldn't waste the funds on something I'm not going to read, or at least have the intention of reading. I could think of much better and lucrative ways to invest my money.

Yes, it's alright but it's such a waste to buy books and not read them. It could be a good investment if you know how to preserve them. Books have a tendency to disintegrate over time.
