For people of countries who are exempted from visa formalities, I would say the first thing you do is to have a passport, and apply for visa of the country you want to visit. I am serious, because one of my bosses from Germany got refused where German passport was not enough. In our earlier trips to the US, a common fault was to bring along food not allowed, like fresh fruits, dried beaf, which were taken out of the luggage when going through the customs.
