What is the difference if you pay credit or debit with the debit card?

So, if you shopping at a store, and you are ready to pay for your items. The staff told you the total amount of the pirce, and you took out your debit card ready to swipe the machine, then the staff might ask you "is it a debit or credit"? What is the difference? I once paid with debit, and I simply punch my pin to it; another time, I said "credit", they go through it.

Debit takes it out immediately or quicker then credit. Credit takes it out a little bit later and I think it might also help with your credit score, etc. Some stores won't take debit cards as credit though, so while you can usually say "credit" even if it's debit, there are occasions that it will deny it. Some gift cards have to be ran as credit, while some you just hand to the cashier.

If you pay debit then that is when the pin is in use, but some debit cards you can use as credit as long as they have like the visa/mastercard logo so there you only have to sign. In most cases it is a preference thing. Also for my Wachovia card if I use credit then I get 1 point for every dollar I spend and then I can redeem those points for prizes. Plus - for actual stores, its cheaper for them to run a card as debit than credit because with credit there is a charge you have to pay depending on the company. Like for my store we don't accept American Express because of how high their charge is.

If you pay debit, you put in your pin # and do not have to sign. If you choose credit, you have to sign it. If you do debit, it is taken instantly from your account. If you do credit, it may take a couple of days for the transaction to process. some banks will charge a fee for using one or the other. That seems to vary so you may want to check your statement or ask your bank. My bank doesn't charge regardless of what I use.
