Do you bite your nails ?

Psychologists hold that those who bite their nails are sort of nervous people. This is the outer expression of their lack of self confidence, anxiety or tension. Or they are too serious on anything they are at. Some people who I have asked denied this. The say it is a habit. But interestingly an addict nail biter quits this at certain time of their life. What is your say on this? Are you a nail niter yourself? Please share. Rajib. 21.04.09

Hi there, Since I have bought a nail cutter, I have avoided biting my nails. I don't like the taste of my nails too. In past I was afraid of cutting them by using blades, so I was using my teeth as a weapon to bite my nails up! LOL

Hey Sanadoodoo, If you dont like the taste on your nails, dip them in chocolate or peanut butter first and then bite them..Its a whole new experience. Not that I know for sure, because I was never a nail biter...

Wah, sanu, what a weapon to trim your nail? Good that now you are out of it. And this speaks for you that you are now a more confident fellow.

Yeah I have read too that biting nails is a sign of lack of self-confidence and nervousness and in general all habits are. Habits is a way of releasing tension or getting our minds to think of something else when we're usually nervous. I do bite my nails when I was still a kid. Luckily I was able to get rid of that bad habit cause it's unhealthy. Our hands touches anything and so it's dirty and we can get sick from biting our nails. I don't know how I was able to stop it. I just realized I am not doing it anymore. I have a friend who even in our high school years she still bites her nails and oh my God, her fingers looked ugly already hehe. Ciao!

Hi, nee, your mom told you the right thing I guess. Nail biting could be an outlet to your pent up anxiety or nervousness but this is not the way out to vent your feelings. There are others ways too. Thanks lot for responding.

i'll say i'm not a nail biter but i have a tendency to put my thumb nail tip in between my front teeth. i do this if an authority tells me something i really am not aware or guilty of.

Well Ritchelle, that is not to worry but what I feel is that it is better to give it up. When your authority would be talking to you just remember at that time that you are in the act and just remove the thumb. Thanks for responding.

It can be true. I used to bite my fingernails when I was in my teenage years, 13 to 15 y.o. I must agree that I still lack the self confidence then. I stopped when I turn 16, It is the time that I have gain confidence and respect of my friends and acquaintances.

I have to laugh. Some people here are truly obsessed about dirt and filth and disgusting and/or gross germs. These are some of the words used to describe the act or habit of nail biting. If I do something to soil my hands, I wash them. Yes, I'm a nail biter and I also eat with my hands (shock horror). I even pat my animals and then eat a sandwich without washing my hands! Oh dear...I must be a walking, talking virus! When you've had children and kept animals and cleaned up after both animals and humans you tend to get over seeing everything as gross and disgusting. I'm as healthy as a horse and so are my kids...I reckon a few every day germs everyday help build up our immune system and help fight the really dangerous germs.

Wow! what a logic! The last line was an icing on the cake. Yes we need to let our body build up immune system or else any ordinary disease would flat you down. thanks friend for responding.

I used to bite my nails, but I have almost seemed to grow out of it or maybe I have just stopped doing it. I now pull on my eyelashes though. I think that is from my anxiety though.

I understand that it's part of my ocd and it's like someone pulling their hair. I like my nails long, so I decided to stop biting them a while ago. I think that I almost just grew out of it.

I think nail-biting may begin because of nervousness or insecurity and then becomes an addictive habit. I'd love to know at what age you are supposed to quit though, I'm 58, my sister 50 yet both of us still bite our nails. Me - it's often when I'm bored, but my sister does it all the time and doesn't even know she's doing it. lol. Neither of us are nervous people, it really is just a bad habit we've never outgrown. My other 3 sisters and 2 brothers have never bitten their nails at all!

It might be because your nails are weak from biting them for so long. That is, if you bit them for a long time. Try filing your nails from corner to center on both sides and then straight across on the top. This should help strengthen them. I used to work as a nail tech and I learned this in school. Kathy.

Hi Rajib!I used to bite nails and to overcome that habit my friend suggested an idea which worked. She told me to grow my nail and keep them well polished with nail polish.so, whenever I take them near my mouth to bite i dont feel like disfiguring my nail and take them away from my mouth!Yes ,I used to bite my nail when I was nervous or excited about anything.

hi rajib dada! m not a nail biter.. not even when the Indian cricket needs 10 runs to win from 2 balls. well, biting nails shows low self confidence. well, there are some people who unconsciously copy other people; in this case it become a habit of some people. to all nail biters, just stand in front of the mirror and bite your nails... then see how do you look..? the way you see your self others also see you like that most of the time...once you try this.. you would not bite your nails anymore..

Hi sis, you said the very right word here I daresay. unless one realizes how it is to bite nails he/she would not realize the actual picture that forms as they are in the act. And the mirror would be a good guide to get rid of nail biting habit.

I don't have this kind of habit to bit own nails this is very dirty thing, no one should do this. But I show some people whos biting nails many times I think this happed when they think something in their mind & habit. So I dont have this kind of habit. I don't think that this is symbol of lack of Self Confidence.

I never bite my nails.People say it is harmful for the body.all the germs within our nails will go in the stomach and cause problems. My friend bites his nails at college.I never know the reason why.I think they do it to keep their nails trim instead of using the nail cutter.

Im 53 and have been a life long nail biter. Why? I can not say. Seriously i do not know the reason. But the psychologists you mentioned above are full of crap. Coz iam the most laid back person you can come across. I managed to stop for awhile when i was in my late 20's. Mainly coz i wanted to have long beautiful painted nails. I noticed that i will chew them during a scary movie. Or really any intense movie. I also noticed that when im riding the city bus. I will find a nail that needs to be trimmed or filed (a ruff edge) but instead i start to chew to even it out and the next thing i know it completely chewed off. I have recently desided again to let them grow. I plan to carry a small manicure set in my bag for those moments on the bus. I have also bought a manicure set from avon that im excited about using. Soon as they start growing out.

Hi friend! I am not a nail biter. I think it is defiantly a sure sign that someone is either nervous or developed a nervous habit. I think that we all read body language to a certain extent and that would be one of the reactions I would expect from someone that is nervous, uncomfortable, or out of their element. I think it may also indicate boredom but that would depend I suppose on the situation. Take care.

Hello my friend Rajib Ji, Since my child-hood, we were always shouted/rebuked for bitting nails by our parents, as a bad habits. And same thing I passed on to my children and gran children. Psychologists opinion is always welcome. But initially, it was due to sucking of bad elements into our mouth and cause bad health. So we cut our nails at proper intervals. They collect all dirt from outside as well as from our own body while we scratch etc. Bitting nails clearly indicates frustration. Let's stop it. In my case, I am unable as , I am tooth- less. May God bless you and have a great time.

Hi rajib..you give us all these great topics to answer but I notice you dont answer as well... Do you bite your nails? Well I must say, that is a habit I have never had. I was never a nail biter all my life. Sometimes they are too long and I need to cut them or I will break them then get mad at myself for doing it, but never do I bite them. Its a bad habit as lots of dirt can be embedded in your nails even if you just washed your hands. Now tell us, do you bite your nails? I bet you will say NO!!
