Hello All, Have you heard that many from the graduating class of American University, in Washington D.C., are urging the university administration to un-invite Barney Franks from speaking at their commencement ceremony? There are more than 140 seniors, from all political pursuasions, who are outraged that Barney Frank is slated to speak at their commencement. Though, you might be surprised by the reasons. Below is a statement and link to the account. However, before we move on let me take a moment to highlight a comment from one of the organizers (Sarah DiStefano) of the challenge to Barney Franks. She went on the record on Neil Cavuto's show to announce that while certain of the participants are well know Democrat students, having been active in the student Dem Party, many others have expressed a fear of retribution as they embark on the career searches, and have thus been 'scared silent'. How infuriating is that? The AU students content that: "It [students' pride from graduating from AU] will be tarnished by a man who lacks credibility, and has given Americans reason to question the effectiveness of their government," the letter said. "If AU wants to breed the leaders of tomorrow, it won't happen by celebrating today's failures." "There are plenty of actually inspiring individuals here in Washington at our disposal," DeStefano said in the e-mail. "I don't know why American had to pick someone who in my opinion is dishonorable, corrupt, irresponsible self-serving and entirely unwilling to admit his mistakes. It doesn't seem like something an academic institution would want to celebrate." http://media.www.theeagleonline.com/media/storage/paper666/news/2009/04/16/News/Frank.Will.Speak.At.Spa.Graduation-3712440.shtml What say you?

It's no fun making fun of Barney Frank... no satire can compare to his real life. ;~D

Hello ParaTed, As for these AU students, this is their graduation. Seems to me that it should be they who decide who will offer them words of inspiration and guidance as they embark on the journey. If they find Barney Franks inadequate and/or offensive, they ought to be shown the respect by the administration to seek a more universally accepted commencement speaker. How many tens of thousands of dollars does it cost to obtain a four-year degree these days? Whether it's Notre Dame, or American University, the students ought to have a say. If there are sound reasons to object, or to seek a particular invitation for any specific speaker then the students wishes do need to be considered. Afterall, those graduating students have paid for their commencement ceremony -- Barney Franks didn't. In both the ND & AU cases, the students have been very clear in providing their reasoning. The administration should be equally forthright. Personally, I find it terribly inappropriate that the university administration has let it go this far without seeking a replacement speaker. What reason would the university administration have to dig its heels in over keeping Franks on the roster? Hmmm???

I agree and I commend them for taking a stand. I don't think that Barney Frank should be set as a role model for anybody!

When college kids from a school like America U. do not want to hear from Barney Franks, I think they are staring to lose their support base. I am sure that American U. is not a bastion of conservatism so this cannot be a good thing for Barney and his fellow Dems.

Hello Gewcew, I agree! I have to hope that the school administration sees fit to respect the students who have paid for the right to attend 'their' commencement exercise -- as opposed to Barney Franks' commencement ceremony.

I am glad to see the AU students are concerned about the environmnet. Think of the HOT AIR that would be produced and all the BS being spued aobut if Barny Frank were allowed give the speech. I guess there are still a few independent thinkers being produced in the Universitys.

With any luck, if he does speak, then he will be afforded the same courtesy and respect that Tancredo received the other day... ie shouted down and driven from the podium. Frank should be in prison, not speaking at graduations. He is a disgrace to America, as is the rest of his party.

Hello Destiny, I would afford the students who shut down Tancredo the same respect as I am affording the AU students, except that they do not deserve it! The AU students are confronting the issue well in advance. They are conducting themselves civilly, and they have provided well formulated reasons -- in writing -- for their concerns. The students who shut down Tancredo were an 11th hour mob, all riled up by villifying, radical, professors. The Tancredo incident was a disgrace to the art of civil dissent. I agree that Franks is no source of pride for me as an American. Perhaps others feel differently, though it is my prerogative, your prerogative, though most importantly the AU graduating students prerogative to denounce the man and his less than honorable history.

Hi LadyLuna, I was this close to writing off all the college kids as left wing slackers. I love this. "todays failures" is so truthful.

Hello Ima_C_Suvaya, Yeah, this is quite restorative, isn't it? Way to go Sarah & the other 140(+) AU graduating students. As the facts are laid out, these students have conducted themselves quite honorably. I'm proud of them!

They should let him come if they can tar and feather him in front of everyone.
