Sooo...Timothy Geithner! New Sec. of Treasury!

So I'm reading NewsWeek Magazine, don't ask me why, and I see that Geithner is the new Secretary of the Treasury. I randomly brought it up in an awkward silence situation, trying to start a conversation. My friend said to this: "Yea, irnoic, isn't it?" bell rang for the next class, so I didn't get to ask him what he meant. If you also think his position is ironic, tell me! I wanna know! I don't see any irony in being the treasurer... so... does anyone even understand how there could be irony? How is Timothy Geither being sec of treasury ironic?
