Could anything else go wrong?

Tomorrow is my day off and I had planned to take my car to the shop for brakes. They have been grinding for about a week and I am getting nervous. I had the appointment and was getting ready to finish up work and take my car over there and meet my husband for a ride home. Half an hour before the end of work I got a text from him saying his car had died and where should he have it towed. Then he said that we wouldn't be able to take my car for brakes. I blew up and told him that my car was unsafe to drive the way it was and it was darn well getting the brakes done tomorrow. Long story shorter, his car is at one shop and mine is at another. We borrowed his brother's car until tomorrow since my hubby works in their business and wouldn't be available without it. His car is so old and isn't worth much. So how much should I spend fixing his car before just trashing it and getting a cheap used car? He has a 98 Escort that has been nothing but trouble the last few years.

I would say that if the car no longer works, scrap it and get a good used car. It would do no good for the car to be at the shop every week. Then it is no good for anything. You could leave it outside your house and hope someone runs into it,then you could get the insurance, but it would not be honest. I would say $500 is the limit or half of what the car is worth now.

That is the exact limit I was thinking of.

Happy Monday... today is my 3rd Monday in a row... apparently it looks like a Monday for you too! What is wrong with his car right now? When u get that fixed, would something else happen immediately after? Sometimes getting a cheap used car isn't any better then fixing what u already have... Get a GOOD check over on it and make sure if you decide to get a new car it's in great condition everywhere too! Fran429

We didn't hear anything about his car today. Mine, however, would cost 3 Grand if I fixed all of the stuff they found. As it is, the two safety issues are going to cost 1800.

Trace86, sometimes it never rains just pours! Even for me, for the past few days everythings been going wrong one way or the other. Coming to your issue, I guess its time to get a new car. Happy searching!

Bummer! Car trouble is something I sure wouldn't want right now, so I can really sympathize with you. You want a car that runs well, but is still old enough so that your costs do not go up...a new car is so much more expensive to insure, license, etc., that I just do not think they are worth it. I drive my cars into the ground, and then buy low-mileage used replacements, generally from car rental agencies. Then I have stuff rebuilt, like the transmission, engine, etc. Most of my cars lasted around 14 years before getting replaced altogether.

As it sounds on your story, i would just get a new car. In the end the car that is broke will cost you a lot more, because you will have to bring it in for repairs and service very often and that will cost a way lot more than if you jsut bought a new car that functions properly. Sounds like the car you are talking about have it's best years behind it and it is time to get a new one that is not unsafe to travel in. One day something will go terribly wrong while you are out using it and then you will probably regret that you didn't buy a new car.

I can't afford a new car. I probably couldn't get approved for the loan.
