any success on matrix systems?

Has anyone ever had good success with these matrix systems? you know, the ones where you pay a fee, then you get a referral to pay a fee and you earn through so many levels.. I always seen them about, but I've never bothered with them as they look rather scamful. so even if you do enough research to get a very trustful one, then other people will just see it as a scam so iut must be hard to get referrals.. Any of you guys ever tried it? and was it a success, scam, failure?
