so, i was just watching "Modern Marvels" on The History Channel...........yeah, i'm a $lut for science and all things that learn my brain. anyways the show was all about the element carbon. they talked about carbon fiber race cars, carbon based life(US!!!) and got around to discussing diamonds which are actually carbon which has been compressed under intense pressure for billions of years, until it becomes crystallized carbon or diamonds. well it turns out scientists have discovered a white dwarf star 17 light years from Earth which is made out of crystallized carbon. so this star, named BPM37093, is actually a GIGANTIC DIAMOND as big as.........well, as big as a star. it's estimated carat weight is 10^33 or 10 billion trillion trillion carats. Sorry mate, but I think Donald Trump has already used other people's money to buy it so he can set it in the next engagement ring he'll be giving to his 47th Eastern European model Wife that loves him for his looks and personality. All that aside though, that's one heck of a find! 17 light years away is not so bad either. If someone heads off now, they should reach it by around the year 6843. What intrigued me not so long ago was a show I was watching that had people getting deceased person's ashes compressed into fake diamonds to wear as jewellery. They had some machine that provided ridiculous amounts of localized force to make them. Strange stuff! Ketchup, Catsup? Neither, where I come from we call it "Tomato Sauce".

I guess they wanted them to be turned into fake diamonds so they could wear them close to their hearts but seriously I wouldn't be able to wear it if I knew it had once been the remains of a deceased person. To scary and would definitely give me nightmares about it. I told my husband I was having him cremated but I guess what is going to be in the Urn is what I'll have left of him. Note* I went in search of my Ketchup bottle and it says that It is made up of a Tomato concentrate that is made up from (water and tomato paste)high fructose corn syrup, vinegar, salt, onion powder, spice and natural flavors. Has anyone just used actual plain tomato sauce as a dip for fries? I guess it would be something to try when I run out of ketchup.

This is fantastic news Stormy! Does her name have about six K's in it? Not only does that man ooze charm and sophistication out the wazoo, his hair is one of the only things that'll survive a nuclear holocaust! TLChimes, in situation's like these, the only thing to do really is track down all the people involved and get 'em on Jerry Springer! And for the record, I didn't read all the other responses before replying myself and guybrush mentioned the ashes/diamond angle already a few sections up! My bad, guy!

I do not eat dimonds nor do I put them in the space craft. I let the kids play catch with them.

Well, it's not impossible since carbon can turn into diamond. Actually, ordinary charcoal and diamond is from the same element. What makes them different is the crystal structure. So, the star you've mention was actually a black charcoal-like star million years before.

We don't have ketchup OR catsup. It's plain ol' tomato sauce in the Land of Oz! Monster diamonds falling from the sky? It'll probably land on Elizabeth Taylor and squash her flat. I read recently they are now making 'diamonds' out of the cremains of dearly departed ... you can have granny's ashes heated to an unbelievable degree, at which stage it then becomes a solid which resembles a diamond .. and can be mounted in 'heirloom jewellery'. Creepy, eh?

Let's hope NASA doesn't find out too soon. If they do...chances are they'll send the next shuttle crew on a mining mission! "Forget Mars and the Moon gentlemen...we're now on a galactic mission to --- the DIAMOND STAR! In the meantime, we'll be having our experts scan the heavens for --- GOLD STARS, in case we need to make a pit-stop along the way." "Now, what did we do with all those mini Hubble-scopes?" "Pass 'em around." cdrxo
