Inbreeding a Purebred?

I have a purebred Male Boxer that I will be breeding within the next few weeks or so. As for the breeders rights I am choosing the Pick of the Litter but a female. I do not have the wishes of breeding the pup with her father. However I was told that if I wanted to keep the bloodline pure I HAVE to inbreed the puppy when I chose to breed her. I thought this was the exact opposite of what I am supposed to do! Am I or am I not supposed to inbreed to keep a pure bloodline?

Many people do this to keep the bloodline "pure". It is common with breeding purebreds that are meant to be shown because it is usually done for the name or for the traits. However, if you are breeding to sell or keep them as pets, this should not matter. Inbreeding father/daughter and mother/son and even brother/sister can lead to genetic disorders because of the limited gene pool. If you are a quality breeder you should know the pros and cons of inbreeding already. It sounds like you are studding out your male for breeding? Then picking a female from the resulting litter to breed as well. Just make sure that you know that females can only breed and give birth safely between the ages of 2 and 6 years. You probably already know that but I have heard of too many people not following that age rule and losing the mother and pups! Good luck with your breeding!

Thanks for your insight. I actually really dont know anything about breeding but I was told this the other day and I just had to know. I am studding my dog yes, to keep a puppy for us. I was just more or less wondering within time could I breed the both of them together, wasnt planning on it as I have heard the genetic disorder part before. I knew the female shouldnt be bred before 2 but had no idea about stopping at 6. My dog came from a 13 yr old mom! I know alot of people that dont follow that guideline if its true. But I would like to follow things they way they should if I do chose to breed in the future. So I greatly appreciate you telling me these things.

Thanks very much for the links, I appreciate it. I will definetly be reading up on those. I thought the same thing about the genetic disorders as well, but after arguing with someone I had to hear other peoples opinions.
