Does anyone out there have a chronic disease?

I have had multiple sclerosis for about ten years, and I am now a retired system administrator receiving Social Security. Although I have to use a walker and wheelchair to get around, I am thankful that I have MS, rather than diabetes, heart disease, or many other serious diseases. MS affects my mobility, but does not stop me from using my computer and the internet--my passions. I would be interested in hearing how other people cope with a chronic medical condition such as MS. I often tell people that I don't mind having MS--it's not painful, it's not fatal, and (so far) it only affects my mobility, for which I can compensate. Do you have a chronic health problem? How does it affect the quality of your life? How do you compensate? What solutions do you use to overcome any disability? I'd like to hear from you.

I was diagnosed with MS in Feb 1993 and a lumbar tap confirmed it, right side of my body was paralyzed and for a month i felt helpless and useless. But my speech and mobility gradually came back. I appear to have not suffered the disease at all but mild symptoms still manifest every once in a while. I am currently employed in the postal service and sometimes work pressures and the weather get to me. I get numbness on my arms and legs and my limbs feel like they have lost their strength. It's not painful but always need a massage to wake my sleeping nerves up and go on with life. It's been five years since i saw a neurologist and it was only to ask for a clearance before undergoing a minor surgery where anesthesia is needed. I only take Vitamins and mineral supplements and i live a "good life" with my husband who just fill our moments together with love and God's abiding grace. Hi philtaylor, nice to have someone like you and other members of our myLot community who knows how people with chronic disease like us feel each time the disease seem to get us down. We just move on and get on...myLotting! ^_^

Thanks for your response. I take quite a few vitamins, particularly vitamin B-12 and grape seed extract, and I find them helpful. I don't have any prescriptions, and there is no approved treatment for my type of MS (primary progressive), but they're working on it, I'm sure. I am affected by hot weather and get weak if I overdo. Thanks for sharing your story with me, and, yes, keep Mylotting! --philtaylor

Yes, I have fibromyalgia which is an autoimmune disorder that is in or near the MS family. It too affects my mobility and I am in pain every moment of every day. I also have the diabetes (newly diagnosed), high blood pressure, and obesity. I am tyring to work on my dietary habits to cut my risk of heart attack and stroke down but I am not always very good at it. I have had fibromyalgia for about 13 years. I do not yet get disability so I am still struggling with work plus raising a young daughter. It is a a battle everyday and some days I want to give up but I know I can't for her sake. I am learning to apppreciate everyday that I get through successfully.

Thank you for your response. I have friends with fibromyalgia, and I sympathize with your situation. With diabetes too you MUST maintain good dietary habits. Do the best you can, don't give up, and enjoy life to the fullest. I wish you well. --philtaylor

I am sorry but you seem very content with your life. You are amazing. I don't have any cronic health problems other than what comes with the traditional aging process. Typical things such as high blood pressure and cholesterol. My blood sugar is a little high so the dr. is watching it before he actually diagnoses me with Diabetes and I have to be put on meds. I am retired, early retirement, so the social security is great. I also work a few hours each week at a golf course. Have a good weekend, carolbee

Thanks for your comment. Yes, I guess I am content. As I often tell people, if you have to have a chronic disease, MS is is not the worst. It's not fatal, not painful, and usually only affects mobility. My wife uses flax seed in water every night, and has lowered her cholesterol and blood sugar sigificantly. You might want to try that before your Dr. sells your soul to the big pharma industry. Anyway, thanks for commenting! --philtaylor

Yes, I have severl chronic diseases, chronic rhinitis and chronic laryngitis, they didn't affect the quality of my life very much, because they're also not painful and fatal. I even didn't find any solutions to overcome them.

Thank you for your response. I'm sorry you suffer from these various chronic conditions. I am glad they are not painful nor fatal, but regret you haven't found any solutions. Keep on keeping on. I wish the best for you. --philtaylor

Lil, I feel so bad for you. I know a lot of people who have trouble getting approved for Social Security. Don't give up though. I know how hard it is to manage from day to day. Stress only aggravates it even more and I know your stress level would go down if you could get your Social Security and know you have an income every month. Are you working with an attorney? Hopefully something will work out for you soon.

I was told that I had a 95% chance of having MS 10 years ago. I'd had an MRI scan and was told that they found 1 or more scars. I found that very confusing, because either they could see 1 or they could see more. When I asked what it could be if not MS the consultant said possibly a virus. I also asked to see my brain scan, but they had lost it! I refused to have a lumber puncture without a good reason, and was told it was so that they could reach a diagnosis, but that it would make no difference to the treatment that I'd receive. The only help that was offered to me was a counsellor (to help me come to terms with all the horrible things that were likely to develop). I decided to deal with it in my own way, and was getting better and better until about 18 months ago when I couldn't walk for about a month. Since then I have continued to improve again. I don't go out to work because I don't have much energy, but I do keep active, and enjoy life very much.

Thanks for your reaponse. Like you, I refused to have a lumbar puncture, but unlike you, an MRI confirmed I had MS. Your inability to walk for a month and lack of energy seems to indicate relapsing-remitting MS (the most common kind), but of course I am not a doctor and don't know. In any case, stay well, and keep enjoying life! --philtaylor

I was told that my MRI scan alone could not confirm MS. Also, when I saw the consultant last time, about 3 years ago, he said that he could no longer diagnose MS.

mine is JRA( juvenile rheumatoid arthritis), had it since 3 got diagnosed at 7. I am already 37 going 38 on july 1. my condition is severe, my actions and mobility are compensated but i can manage. I had a cane, i use it once in awhile. I'm not working but i do have a convenient store at home which keeps me busy and instead of moping around with my condition. I do household chores like i cook, wash dishes. we do not have health insurance in our country so i rely on my mom since the meds are expensive for me to shoulder it. I already had both hips replaced 8yrs ago to relieve pain and also help me to be mobile. since this is progressive, other joints are already affected other times it bothers me but i had to keep a positive outlook on everything despite of my condition, i try to appreciate things and just go on and enjoy life.
