NEWTON, Iowa -- President Obama marked Earth Day Wednesday by announcing a new initiative to lease federal waters for the purpose of generating electricity from wind and ocean currents.
President Obama unveils a new energy initiative Wednesday in Newton, Iowa.
The president announced the initiative, to be administered by the Interior Department, while reiterating his pledge to push for a comprehensive energy plan that encourages the development of alternative fuel sources, cuts dependence on foreign oil, addresses climate change, and creates new jobs.
Wind power can generate 20 percent of the country's electricity by 2030 and support 250,000 jobs, Obama said during a visit to a wind turbine tower manufacturing plant.
It is part of "beginning a new era of energy exploration," he said.
Contrary to the assertion of some critics, the country does not have to choose between protecting the environment and expanding the economy, Obama said. The real choice is between "prosperity and decline."
The president said there is no "silver bullet" to solving the country's energy needs, and that a variety of energy sources will be required to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. The United States needs to boost domestic production of oil and natural gas in the short term before fully transitioning to alternative sources, Obama said.
But over the long term, new energy sources will be required both to address the issue of climate change and strengthen the economy, he said.
Meanwhile, Vice President Joe Biden said Wednesday that $300 million in stimulus money will be given to state and local governments to help expand the number of clean and sustainable vehicles in cities around the nation. The program is called the Clean Cities Alternative Fuel and Advanced Technology Vehicles Pilot Program.
"Every day is Earth Day," said Biden at a Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority training facility in Landover, Maryland, where he announced the program.
The plan, according to Biden, would help local governments and transportation authorities invest in clean vehicles and fund the fueling infrastructure to support them.
"From advanced battery cars to hybrid-electric city buses, we're going put Recovery Act dollars to work deploying cleaner, greener vehicles in cities and towns across the nation that will cut costs, reduce pollution and create the jobs that will drive our economic recovery," Biden said in a statement.
The funding adds to $11 billion already allocated to the Department of Energy to boost local energy efficiency programs and weatherize low-income homes. To participate, local governments have to apply to the Clean Cities Program for funding, and they can receive money for a variety of hybrid vehicles and alternative fuels.

I agree that American has GOT to become energy independent and the sooner the better. Not only will it help keep prices lower but also then foreign countries would not be able to use oil as a weapon against us anymore.

Scarey huh? But not surprising. I really do not fit with either political party. THere are some things I like in each and some things I dislike in each. And a lot I dont like about both.

I think this is a great idea. To all of the right wingers on here that oppose everything that Obama does; I ask you how much you enjoyed paying $4.00 a gallon of gas last year? Obama, unlike any other president over the last thirty years, is actually doing something about our countries need for energy. Our country isn't going to have economical energy for very long. Once the economy starts to move again, oil prices will go up driving everything else through the roof. I recall listening to all you republicans cheering when Bush lifted the ban on drilling off shore. Now, many of those planes are being shelved because they can't make money off of that oil, and if they drill there, they will just increase supply, while demand is in the gutter, thus lowering the price, and their all mighty profits. What Americans have to understand is that the oil companies don't care about anything but their own profits. They don't want reasonable prices for oil, they watn $200.00 a barrel oil. If the government doesn't step in and provide funding for alternative energy, we will be forced to purchase oil from people that fund terrorist. Do you enjoy funding terrorist? This is a national security issue wheather you know it or not, and if you think that oil prices will stay this low forever, you are completely insane.

" I ask you how much you enjoyed paying $4.00 a gallon of gas last year? "
wait untill a year from now when your paying 3 times your electric bill. there are some pretty horrendously destructive energy and climate policies comming this way my freind, marque my words. there is a heck of a shell game being played in that right now.
but on to your response.
That being said. I am all for using every natural resource we have at our disposal to eliminate our dependence on foriegn energy. The problem is the ambition and need has grown exponentialy while the technology is still in the stome ages. Wind, despite the misconception, cannot supply 20% of our energy yet. Solar has a HUGE footprint and storage batteries haven't quite caught up in capacity yet. Bio fuels we found very quickly that the land needed to gorw the stuff was immense and the carbon impact of growing that supply was much greater than was saved by the fossil fuels that were eliminated. Not to mention the sharp sudden rise in food staples prices world wide.
I will get behind any plan that has enough detail, enough common sense and enough firmly backed science behind it and also has a WAY TO PAY FOR IT, with OUT bnakrupting us, printing money, borrowing or taxing us in to poverty. Perhaps by selling the oil we produce and no longer need in the world market? *shrug* just one thought.
We could well und up screwing ourselvs in the proccess of trying to save ourselves if we are not carefull.

X, I do agree that some of the technology has a ways to go, but some we can use today, and it can save use millions. Here in Ohio, we are making solar panels that are thousands of times more effecient that just a few years ago. I have customers that don't pay a dime in electricity because they installed a small wind generator onto their house. The more research we do, the more we understand about our possibililties of alternative energies.
Bio fuels can be made with other products besides corn, and soy beans. The most effecient is Sugar (ever wonder why Obama may be making nice with all of these countries in central America? They have huge amounts of sugar), there are countries that don't use one drop of oil to fuel their cars, and trucks. What many people don't understand is that wind power could produce more energy than all of the oil platforms we could build off of our shores. Drilling isn't the solution, it is our problem. Can you tell me how many of those proposed drilling sites that Bush opened up are producing oil? Check it out.

The only problems with Obama's wonderful new plans is that it is going to bankrupt all of the taxpayers here in the States. He keeps on adding new things for us to pay for and we do not have any money to pay for them.
GM says it is going bankrupt so on top of that he is going to give them millions more money that they will not have to pay back. Now they are going to close for 9 wks. and all of their employees will go on unemployment. Where will that money come from?
He is going to give Chrysler millions more because Fiat doesn't wnat them now. Where is that going to come from.
He is going to spend millions on ethanol when the price of Oil is down to $46 a barrel but it is still over $2 at the pump. Why hasn't anyone looked into that. IT TAKES MORE THAN A GALLON OF OIL TO MAKE A GALLON OF ETHANOL. WHERE IS THE SAVINGS IN THAT?
Something is seriously wrong here.

ya i know what you mean. it sound like a good plan over all, but here are some things that are very unclear. for one whos going to be paying for all of this? personally our economey is already bad enought that we dont need to be paying more tax just for this plan. this would cause us to be more in debt then we already are and thats not a good thing. ya it may creat new jobs for some but in the long run its wont help our economy. thanks for giving you opinion on this and for taking the time to respond to this.

Sounds like blackmail to me. Some of the state governments didn't take the bailout money and everybody thought they were crazy. There is nothing free in this world, if you take the money you have to do what they say. How come the same doesn't work for Dorkbama, people gave him money but he does his own thing.

The president is trying his best to do his best.
I'm not a political girl or a scientific girl, but I feel like what he's doing is great for the whole world.
