one key to constant happiness - improve a little on something

It is amazing that some people, rich or poor, may get bored doing the same old things. Someone suggested that the solution to be constantly happy is to constantly work at improving one's ability to help one's self and others. I remember a story of a young child who wanted to try new things in the family printing shop. He would make toys and imagine things like all young people did. Soon he was learning to fix machines and to make the story short, he became a very successful businessman doing precision mechanical fixtures. When times became difficult, he continued to improve his capability by learning new technologies and software. There is a saying: "if we keep on improving our ability do, no matter how little each day, we'll wake up one day and be amazed at the huge result" There is also a saying:"The greatest reward for our toil is not what we get for it but, rather, what we become by it." - J.Ruskin Cheers

If we can make improvement continuously, will we be always happy? Is happiness only linked with one's ability?

thanks Ninebags, 'interesting point. Perhaps an improved ability may not be that critical to being happy. Furthermore, it seems that there are many other sources of happiness such as social, religious and political affiliations - being part of something bigger... There are also sources of happiness like appreciating the outside world, Mother nature. Care to comment?

Perhaps a good reason to have extra financial resources is that we are able to have more options in our life. There's a saying: "We have a better chance to having a better life is we have more options open." Care to comment?

I don't want to be like Lucy - the girl from the movie 50 first dates. She was trap in the day before her accident so she always does the same thing everyday because of that incident. I want to improve my abilities little by little like what you said. And yes, it's really boring doing same thing everyday.

thanks for the comment. It's interesting that there's so much to learn about even about one's own self. There's a saying: "There's a big chance that the change we aspire for our lives will only come about once we choose to do the same things differently..." Cheers
