Hi there, I have just joined a website where they hire freelancers in data entry and many other positions. You will have to take a readiness test and complete a profile and then bid for the available jobs. Depending on the project available, you can set your own fee and you can bid for up to 20 positions per week (provided you have taken four tests or more through their professional assessment tool). It is legitimate; however, for serious seekers only. The website is www.odesk.com

Unfortunely, there are not alot of legit data entry job out there,but everyone wants one. So the scammers come out and create websites to prey on people's emotion. www.guru.com is a place where you can big on some small data entry jobs and then work up a reputation in their system. I haven't done that site but it is legit.
I do understand your need to make some extra money at home. I have been working for several call centers for a few years now at home. Mostly early morning and while the kids at school because I need to keep the house somewhat quiet when doing it. It is legit work and there is decent money to be made. http://wahjobs.blogspot.com has a listing of some of those companies.
