knock on Wood!

I used to hear the word "knock on wood!" from the people ive met while knocking relly on wood if they are referring to something they dont want to be happened. I thought its just an idionatic expressions but it seems the people are very afraid that they are really knocking on the wood!
Is it me who dont understand or they?confusing!
Why they knock on the wood?!
Best if they pray to the One above about their worries,isnt it?

I think you wouldn't lose anything if you believe in it too.
Better to be safe than sorry.
Yeah one way is to pray.
But I also do that thingy..knocking on wood when I say bad that may happen coz I really wish not to and I also pray for that.
So that I will be 100% safe hehehe ^_^

its just an old habit made by people. its one of those fictitious beliefs that we always hear from many people. personally, i dont believe such beliefs. if we dont want bad things to happen, we should pray instead of knocking.
