when i was a kid making mud pies was my favorite thing to do. guess that's what started my love for cooking. of course when i was a kid, kids played outside all day weather permitting. we were miserable if we had to stay in the house on account of bad weather. my sister & i had would get outside, my bigmama had given us old pans & things to make our mudpies in. we were quite created. we decorated tehm w/rocks , sticks whatever we could find. we would take turns playing bakery. she'd be the customer & i'd be the baker then we would switch. those were some good times that i treasure. ever made any???

Oh yes, I can remember sitting in the mud in the yard in Memphis, TN making my mud pies, cooking them and pretending to eat them!! I can even remember trying to bribe my lil sister and brother to eat them but I don't think they ever would!! Mom would get so irritated with us. But it was so so so much fun!

LOL, Memphhis girl who loves her Elvis! No, I live in KY now, just this side of the TN line in a little town right outside of Bowling Green called Morgantown. My family moved from Memphis when I was 14 and moved us to FLA. Let me tell you, although it is a great tourist community it is not a place I would ever ever EVER want to raise children in!
Oh yeah, I didn't say "used to bribe" did I? 'Cuz the thing is, I still do! LOL

Yes, yes, YES! Mud pie making was GREAT! I used to love making mudballs ... moulding them to be nice and round, then rolling them in dry dirt and letting them dry in the sun. My brother and I would also make roads, mountains and little forests, and use his collection of Matchbox cars to drive around our little landscapes! You don't seem to see children doing this anymore ... it's sad. I'm so happy I had a lovely childhood in the 50s and 60s, with lots of outdoor fun, plenty of books and games which used imagination.

It is too bad that many parents don't let the kids do this anymore....even my granddaughter had a sand box and they took it out as she was getting too dirty and dragging sand in the house...what a wonderful way for children to use their imaginations!

it was fun , wasn't it. doubt little girls even make mud pies anymore. it is sad. parents should teach them that u can have fun by doing simple things but they don't. thanks for your response. have a happy week.

Hi Antiquelady,
Those were good old days when i was kid and since we didnt have much things in village so it was but natural we played in fields and played in mud a lot. We would make many things from mud , we would make houses, palaces, small statues and ofcourse cookies and pies too when ever we were in mood and then boys and girls would play in our make believe world. Those were good old days, wont come back again. Times have changed and even the kids of my village dont make mud pies or castles.

A few times. I'd decorate with sticks and stones and various weeds. My mother was not appreciative, cause I'd also bake them. They didn't come off the pans too well, not to mention I wasn't supposed to be touching the stove either! But ya gotta pretend right, don't you? lol

Making those mud pies complete with all the miniature earthen cooking wares during my childhood was just one of the precious memories i could recall. Mud pies and salads from mixed leaves and petals and weeds! Nowadays the mud was replaced by the playdough and they now have plastic mini utensils of different colors. Yes, they won't make a child's hands dirty but the little ones still miss the fun we had with the mud. That's why that time i saw my little niece looking dirty from her face to her toes i just let her be because i knew she had her share of fun rolling on the ground! Lol! ^_^

Ever made any??? Ummm, just last week. It was a blast! Ours were more sand pies than mud pies, but fun. The lid was left off of my son's sandbox during a rain storm and we decided to just make the best of it.
I remember mud pies not being quite as messy when I played with them as a little girl. I do believe that little boys are a whole different ballgame, so to speak. We were both covered in sand and mud by the time we were finished.

Absolutely I made them! And "salads" with grass, onion grass, dandelions, etc. I would preset them to my mom. I remember being out of the house all day! I'm outside several hours nowadays again with my little one - he loves the outdoors. He hasn't discuovered mudpies thoug but he fills up flower pots with dirt and rocks and then dumps it out and starts all over.
I can understand why you treasure those days. I do as well, and now, I treasure these days with my son.

Yes! I grew up on a farm....and one day my dad brought home this play house and it had an old cook stove in it....well we used to "bake" mudpies.....decorate them with those red berries that were on some weed. We also used to decorate them with apples that were rotten but man we spent hours on end just a baking away...we did not however try to really use the old cookstove....(it burned wood)..my dad would have paddled our behinders!

Still do given half the chance grandchildren almost to old now.I seem to be the only one around that wants to be a kid again. My son at fifteen is far to old for that and my granddaughter of six years does not want to ruin her nails. My grandson is game for anything so when the winter comes we will be out there.Sand castles were my favourite on the beach with sticks, feathers, pebbles ect with those paper cups for tea make the wonderful battlements.xxxx

Never made mud pies but I do know a few who did. When i was a kid, my friends and I use to dig holes and fill them with water and then cover them over with grass, kind of like a homemade quicksand as traps for out friends. Boys will be boys
But they were never dangerous, just a few inches deep so no one ever got hurt
