Inner beauty is important...but not nearly as important as outer beauty.

OMG The new Covergirl ad with Ellen Degenres ad rather set me off. Even if its sarcasm - some people dont read sarcasm well. The first thing it says is "Inner beauty is important...but not nearly as important as outer beauty." REALLY? I always was one that thought that looks shouldnt matter its the person you are that matters - the most bueatiful girl in the world cant be a horrible and mean person. It just made me want to write cover girl and tell them that even though the only makeup i wear is mascara i wouldnt be buying their brand anymore because outer beauty isnt more important. I dont usually get mad at advertisements i think some are pretty dumb but this is the first in YEARS that has made me mad. Have you seen the ad? What did you think? Does advertising you see ever make you want to stop buying a company's products? PS a youtube link to the ad. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aL-C58XlHPc

I know nothing about this commercial, but when I read your post a thought came to my mind. It is as follows- "Even if a thousand people say a stupid thing, it still remains a stupid thing". This celebrity you talk off, do you think she cares even a bit for her fans(I doubt if she will have many fans after this statement!), all she cares about is money. You give tons of money to a celebrity and he/she will endorse any product you want, no matter how useless that product may be or how harmful that product may be! In India, many top celebrities endorse soft drinks(carbonated soft drinks, I will not take any brand names because that would put me in trouble but I think you will get my Que), they do not realize that just for the sake of some measly cash they are causing harm to the lives of thousands of their fans(the very same fans who gave them stardom), since carbonated soft drinks is very very harmful to the human body. I cannot understand how such unhealthy drinks get a FDA certificate. This is the one of the many reasons I do not respect celebrities.

Well they would say that wouldn't they. But then they portray all that is wrong with our society. An obsession with presenation and money and not with the things that really matter. ho you are inside is what matters. I wonder what they'd say to someone with a burnt face who wanted to buy their makeup? That kind of slogan just reinforces stereotypes and prejudice.

I hadnt thought of it that way...that its a makeup company they make money off making people feel...less than beautiful without wearing makeup.

I have never seen that commercial, and if I ever do see it, I am writing to the company. Thanks for warning me about it. I am one of those people who don't read sarcasm well at all, and when I saw the title of your discussion, I wondered what the hell you were smoking anyway, to write something like that. LOL Good thinkg curiosity got the best of me and I saw that these were not your words, but someone else's.

I think people judge too much on looks when they meet others for the first time. I'm one that thinks inner beauty is much more important! Glad curiosity got the best of you!

I think ideally people want to think that inner beauty is more important than outer beauty but the reality is that people do value outer beauty and people with more inner beauty than outer beauty typically have to work a bit harder to get noticed. Just take the Susan Boyle incident. Before she opened her mouth to show her talent, she was written off by everyone simply because of her looks. Had she come out on stage looking like a model, people would have already expected to hear a fabulous voice, they would have assumed she already had talent. As far as the commercial and Ellen, I do not think she meant any harm and it clearly seemed like sarcasm to me.

I must ask who's Susan Boyle? (I'm probably going to go look this up because now im curious and I'm home sick with no energy to go do anythign else!) I think ideally people want to think it too..I admit that I will think oh i dont want to talk to that guy cause he looks greasy (or smells drunk) But i really do try not to judge people on their looks - figure i'd be having a double standard hoping people dont judge me on my scars and not my personality.

I might be wrong here but I just looked at add and I didn't take it as her being sarcastic or anything. what I seen was them telling people that other makeup can make you look old but Covergirl will make you look beautfull.

Thats a good point that they are competing with other companies. I just really dont agree with that opening statement they made.

well i disagree that inner beauty is not nearly as important as outer beauty.. what if the most beautiful girl in the world has the most horrible attitude? i don't think so..if she was kidding then that wasn't funny..AT ALL..ü those two traits of a woman shouldn't be compared and separated to each other..ü just an opinion..ü

I think that they are two separate things and that one shouldnt be judged by how pretty they are. Some of the most awesome people arent what magazines and such consider "beautiful" but they are.

I don't have a problem with that commercial, because I didn't take it seriously. Even if people don't get humor I think the commercial is meant to be obvious even for the humor deprived (though mayber it isn't.) Because Ellen DeGeneres is a comedian. She is known as a comedian and has never been known as a supermodel, meaning that she has never been known for her beauty. So when she says that outer beauty is more important, even if it isn't in an obvious humorous tone, people would know she is joking, because she has never been known for her looks, but as someone who jokes. She of course is not ugly, but at the same time she is not a model. Also during the commercial she is fumbling around and at one point she fumbles the make-up right out of her hand, unlike a true serious commercial. I do agree though that they shouldn't say that outer beauty is important, just in case someone takes it seriously. Though, someone buying make-up is thinking about outer beauty. And they have to be doing a lot more with TV shows, etc. to make an impact. That is where people get the idea that outer beauty is important and they get the idea subtly not by direct words. The subtle visuals have more of an impact than direct words on a commercial.

Inner beauty is important however I will say that the outer beauty is important too though it may seems unimportant to someone else. Coming to work, you should be dress accordingly, if a brushing is done it reveals the brightness in your face, if you apply some foundation and so on it is equally imporatant to you than to others, You should be comforatble with yorself instead of fearing what others will say if you give too much importance to outer beauty.

Outer beauty isnt MORE important though. I myself find that makeup is an expensive waste of time. I put it on i break out in a rash (doesnt matter WHAT BRAND) and end up having to use rash cream and allergy medications for weeks to get the rash to go away. The only thing i can wear is lipstick or mascara without breaking out in a itchy scratchy rash.
