hey everyone... i've read a few things online but get different answers. and i guess i will be gettin' different answers here too but just thought i'd ask anyways... what is the lifespan of hamsters?? my brother got him a female hamster back in 2006/2007. he had to go to aussie for university so that left me to adopt and take care of the little thing. she's like almost 3 years old now and i hear this is pretty much the time she will die. she don't seem like she's dyin' although she's not as active as before. she picks on her food optin' for the sunflower seeds over the other stuff thats supposed to be good for her. she drinks a lot more than usual and spends a lot of time sleepin'. i'm thinkin' the drinkin' and sleepin' is coz singapore's been hit by mad weather lately...really hot then rains like no tomorrow then hot again. so i guess she's just keepin' herself hydrated and conservin' her energy?? help??

you are a very kind girl. no matter how long she could live, you have done what you can do. the little thing is leading an easy life with your care. now you should spend more time with her, playing with her, giving the sunflower seeds she likes.

i can't just give her sunflower seeds...she needs other nutrients and vitamins. we reward her with sunflower seeds but i don't wanna spoil her too much or she'll be fussy. she's fussy enough as it is!! :p

It depends. Since hamsters are fairly inbred they don't really have good genetics and don't tend to live over 2-3 years. However, my dad has had tons of hamsters in the past and several of his lived to be over 5 years old. So it depends on the hamster's genetics, diet, and also it does have a better chance if you take it to the vet should you notice anything wrong. I would also recommend weighing the hamster weekly on a gram scale. Since hamsters are prey animals they often hide signs of illness until it is too late to treat that illness. But they can't hide weight loss if you have a scale (they can though if you just look at them, then they can puff out their fur).

Well, it really depends if she is just old or if she is sick. That's why I'd suggest weighing. She has a change in behavior, but if her weight isn't dropping maybe she's just getting to feeling her age. But a vet could determine if she has some type of problem that could be treated.

i haven't taken her to the vet. i know i should but i figured she might as well just live her old age out. i dunno. sometimes i look at her and feel sad that she's old and dyin' but sometimes, i think she knows she's spoilt. :p it's just scary sometimes to see her sleepin' always and not runnin' on her wheel much. i should spend more time with her..
