Should widows be inherited as properties?

Some traditions puts that a widow should be inherited by the person next to her husband. Even though they say it's traditional, most of them don't take proper care of the woman after the death of her husband. Moreso, the so called gods never intervene to rescue such women. I feel such traditions should be abolished. What do you think?
