There is a great article on MSN about what is and isnt a good deal at dollar stores. Though most of it is common sense I did learn a thing or two. http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/SmartSpending/FindDealsOnline/dollar-store-deals-and-duds.aspx?GT1=33007 What do you go to the dollar store for?

I go to the dollar store for lots of things. I always like to compare prices when I buy something. Alot of times I will go to the dollar store and just browse before I do my shopping. I look at things I may buy there, and I check out the size of the product that I am going to buy. Then I usually go to another store to do the bulk of my shopping. If anything that I needed turned out to be a better deal at the dollar store I go back and get it. There are two things that I always buy exclusively at the dollar store, though. I always buy manual can openers and coffee mugs!

I dont go to the dollar store that often but when I do I always buy something. i went before Christmas and bought 40 things. The lady behind me in line was so rude. She was talking to her friend about how anyone could buy things for their kids at the dollar store. I was close enough to hear it all and was a little upset. I go through can openers like crazy, I have never thought to check the dollar store. Thanks for the tip.

You can get some amazing deals at dollar stores the problem is the amount people spend on things they wouldn't have bought otherwise because of their cheap price.

I go in with cash and that is my limit. It is easy to find a bunch of things you dont need but they are great deals. If I only have a few dollars that is all I can spend. I know it isnt the best budget method but it works.

I buy puzzles and workbooks for the kids but I havent thought to buy a mouse pad. I guess I should spend more time there and look through things. I always end up finding something I was shocked they had at the dollar store.

I buy a lot of things at the dollar store. I go there a lot for mostly toilet paper and shampoo. I also buy seasonal items such as valentines cards and decorations for the different holidays. I sometimes buy spices and food there as well. Most of my kitchen utensils have been bought from there as well as my dinner plates.

I have never bought shampoo there. I seem to think that it wont be as good as the stuff I can get from the store, or that it is more expenxive then the cheap stuff when it goes on sale. I can often get shampoo for $.79 on sale, but I do have to wait for a sale to get it at that price.

That reminds me I really need new dish pan scrubbers. I do love the cards you can get at the dollar store by me. $.50. Cant beat that price for a nice card. Thank you.

I tend to go for paper - sticky notes, note pads, pens, pencils, scrapbooking papers and supplies, mugs (love those huge coffee mugs) candles, dog chewies and toys (they seem to last just as long as the 15 dollar ones that my dogs wreck in 3 days), cd cases and wrappers, luggage tags, seeds, spices (usually garlic, chilli powder and black pepper), sponges, air fresheners and baking soda for my basment, baggies and paper towel. I love the dollar store - i find though there are things that they sell i dont buy if i intend to be using them for a while i tend to get the more disposable stuff from the dollar store. other than spices i rarely buy anything for food at the dollar stores (choc bars and chips n stuff tend to be a bit stale to me from them) and the stores here dont offere much else for food.

I do love the gift wrap and cards at the local dollar store. I bought a card for my Grandmas anniversary for $.50 that would have cost me a few dollars at the store. It wasnt a cheep looking card either, it was nice. Usualy everything I buy at the dollar store I buy with limited expectations. Some times I get things that break by the time I get home.

I buy a fair bit of stuff at the dollar store. Some of the items I buy there are garbage bags, party supplies, gift bags and wrapping paper, cleaner, dish towels and cloths and spices. The best deal I got recently was a 512M thumb drive for $2 and a battery operated ipod charger for $2. I also bought my kids (fake) crocs sandles for $2. I agree that their batteries do suck. They never last and sometimes leak and ruin things.

Wow, what a great deal, Shoes for $2. I should look harder when I get there. I have not bought any garbage bags from there ever and it seems like one of the most logical things to get there.

I love the Dollar Tree! I go there for snacks, after shower powder, coloring books, and whatever else I end up seeing that I like! That is the problem with the dollar tree; you go in there for something specific, you see other things that you like, and you start throwing them in cart, saying to yourself "its only a dollar, its only a dollar." Thing is, by the time you get to the cash register, its only like $100 lol. But I can't stay out of there though, either way. This was a very informative article. I didn't know about the lunchboxes and jewelry, the toothpaste, or the vitamins. I did know about the batteries though. I bought them one time for my CD player, and immediately found out how bad they suck lol. Didn't wast another dollar on that though. Thing is, I bought this ridiculously large pack of the durn things (hey, it was only a dollar), and it seemed like forever to get rid of all of them!

I knew that there could be dangerous stuff at the dollar store but I didnt know what the dangers were. I usualy dont buy anything I would consume unless I know the brand well. The batteries are something I have not bought either. I have had many items come with batteries that were horrible and the dollar store batteries looked similar to them. lol. Its funny. You never know quite what you will come out with when you go in.

I typically only shop for household goods like cleaners, paper products or hygiene care at our local Dollar Stores.

That seems to be what most people are buying at the dollar stores. I will have to look into cleaning supplys more when I am there. Thank you.

I go to the Dollar Tree every once in awhile. I used to go quite a bit when my boys were little for the cheap toys. My now 13 yr old loved the grab bags hehe. About the only thing I get in there is cleaners. I use The Works Tub & Toilet cleaners because we get rust stains in everything & it is the ONLY thing I have found to get rid of them plus it's at least $.20 cheaper, probably more than that now. Every once in awhile if we run out of say foil & we have no money I will scrounge up some change & go to the DT. I watch what I get tho' b/c some things are actually cheaper at Wal-Mart. I always seem to be buying tweezers b/c my boys get ahold of them & mess them up. I was buying them at the DT but realized they were only $.88 for the same brand at Wal-Mart so I won't buy them there anymore. As for the batteries, the first time I ever bought them I knew I'd never buy them from there again b/c they have no juice & do not work in most anything. Instead since we seem to go through so many batteries I've started buying the rechargeable ones, they're soooo much cheaper in the long run.

I have heard that the cleaners are a good deal over and over again but I dont always buy them there. The Works toilet cleaner is on sale at my local Smiths ( Kroger ) for $.99 right now. I guess I should go stock up and see if it will help my cleaning routine as well. Thanks for the great tip.
