Does our names determine our behaviour?

Most people beleive that the names we give to children determines what they will be in future. One of friends, Paul, embarassed his sister last weekend during naming ceremony of her babby. When the was asked "what do you give to you daughter?" she replied "sandra". Paul was mad with her. He argued that sandra is serpent, i.e. snake. How dare you call my cousin snake? Do you believe paul's argument?.

Actually i know nothing about "Sandra the Serpent". And i don't believe that names where given to us or to our children will determines of what we or our children will be in the future later. But some people do believe that names could be important for each people future. But still, i don't think it will determines each person future.

I can't beleive the name "Sandra" would be that awful but I guess I never realized that the name would imply "serpent or snake". Sometimes people name their children some really off the wall, strange name. I think it's good to give your child a name that isn't a really common name and it can be good to be unique, but we must also remember that their name is something that they're going to live with the rest of their life. There are countless books of names to give your baby and the meanings of those names for each particular culture. Depending on Pauls beleifs and how close of a relationship he has with his sister may determine the strength of his argument. If these two are close, then I certainly don't think his sister meant to insult anybody by her comment.
