Autism Gene Discovery

Tonight on the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric Dr. Geri Dawson of Autism Speaks spoke about new discoveries made in the area of Autism as it is linked to genes. I could not find the link on CBS News (I'm guessing too new because it was on tonight's news), but I've found a link via Autism Speaks to an article written for Time Magazine about the research that is being done. http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,1894409,00.html It's fascinating research in that we are a step closer to understanding the development of this disorder, and perhaps a way of coming closer to understanding it. Did anyone else see Katie's program tonight? What are your thoughts on this research? There is much being spoken about in relationship to environmental issues from cleaning products to foods. Do you take this into consideration with your child/student? Do you find that certain things have more negative/positive effect? Namaste-Anora

I think like with all ailments people in research keep coming up with different causes and affects, I hope if they have found something that may be of some help in the near future for the people who suffer with this it would be wonderful, I hope they can win on this one and soon.

I do hope they continue to work on ways to help those who suffer from ASD. It's definately something worth looking at, and hopefully will prove to enrich the lives of many. Namaste-Anora

I missed it. Any progress is positive, of course. But for myself and my son I will feel more hopeful when they find a way to apply the knowledge. If they can... It reminds me of a book I read, recommended to me here on myLot, actually, "The Speed of Dark" by Elizabeth Moon, as well as an article I read a few years back "Don't Cure Autism". It makes me wonder what, if do do find a "cure", we will be losing as far as unique thinking and so on...

Dawn- We have a great deal of information we've been applying to ASD, yet this goes beyond just the "help". This presents a way to deal with ASD more effectively, and help those with it. Though it's a wide range, I don't think that having a "cure" would change the person you are. You'll still be Dawn. You'll still have your same personality. Your spirit is never changed by anything you have or don't have. You're always the same inner person. My hopes are that by finding this gene we may be able to help those with ASD find a way of expressing themselves. Wouldn't that be something if those living in "darkness" as it were, could suddenly verbalize all of their thoughts and dreams? Namaste-Anora

I didn't see it, but I am glad to hear that Autism is being talked about more. Anything that sheds light on Autism is a good thing. Thanks for the info.

I saw that news report and I think it's great they are so much closer to understanding. This is something that effects millions of people and if they could just find out the cause and home in a a cure or a prevention technique it would be great for humanity.

Jen- I so agree with you. I don't think we'll stop seeing ASD cases, but we'll have a way to deal with it and hopefully help people. I also don't think, as I said above, that finding prevention or "cures" will change the person, we are who we are. It's not any different then knowing what we now know about Downs Syndrome. I know there are a lot of factors with autism. Heard them all from shots to genes to they natural sugars in our foods disappearing. I know what it is and how it works, but I still seriously doubt there will be firm answers because all the factors really target the larger companies. General autisum is re-training the brain because the pathway is missing. This can be done, but needs to be caught early and speciality diets need to coinside with all the efforts taking to reverse or retraining of the young mind. Yes there needs to be more studies done, there needs to be more awareness. I think the key factor is genetics, but there are so much in our foods that effect us and children and that I truely believe is a major factor here. Even the mix of immunizations was changed. All these factors tie in together. We need to get back to the basics of unprocessed foods and sugars. Food allergies were very popular at one time. I remember news clip after news clip where children were just out of control after simply drinking a glass of orange juice. That was our first warning signs to how out of control our foods are and how they are effecting us. I've seen people change thier diets and medications can disappear. In all honesty, they never needed them at all, they just had to re-direct what they were giving themselves I could go on and on with this, but yes I'm glad that they are finally taking an interest infinding answers because the cases have more than doubled over the years. Years ago we would just lable a child 'slow' or limited but now there is a reason and a cause that they are actually looking into. I sincerely hope the end result will be truthful in informing the public how this is happing at such an excelled rate.

You've brought up some very good points. We must all keep in mind that studies must be looked at as a whole, and never exclusively. I do wish we'd go back to natural foods though. I think, honestly, if we made food companies stop using processed flours, and high fructose corn syrup that we'd see a great change in the children. I hope we continue to find out how ASD works, and continue to strive toward new ways of teaching this young children. Thanks for your well thought response. Namaste-Anora
