What is the difference between an Emperor and a King?

So the Japanese are celebrating the emperor's day tomorrow, 29 April. I was just curious though as what is the difference between an emperor and a king? Is an emperor higher than a king or the other way round? Or is an emperor just a fancy name for a king? Help me out here people.. Thanks.
