Have you read the book by Dave Crenshaw, "Multi -Tasking (Doing It All Gets Nothing Done)? It bothers me. I have a job that requires multi-tasking. I teach, listen to the student, respond to the student, spot corrections, make corrections, write corrections on our site. At times, I feel accomplish a lot of things in a short span of time but thinking about it, I might have missed some details. What is your view of multi-tasking?

Multi tasking is really needed today especially in the corporate world. I believe a company would prefer an employee that knows how to do most of the task rather than an employee or an applicant who knows less… You should be glad that you have the ability to multi task because some don’t have it. They tend not to focus on the other task, it is a talent. With regards to "Multi -Tasking (Doing It All Gets Nothing Done)… This applies not to all things… I can still sum a correct amount of a purchase item, while listening to the telephone about complaints… it is like hitting two birds at one stone.

Hello nympha687!!! I practice multitasking with my brain a lot. And it has happened many times that I get busy in my own work, or I may be talking or doing something and suddenly another person come and say to me something, then I just can't understand what he just recently. Then I have to be quiet for few seconds what did he mean, no matter how simple thing he said. Though we are doing multitasking, if we look at the instantaneous time, we are thinking only and only a particular thing. Well same is in the case of computers. The computer really divides the time for every task and seems as if it is being done simultaneously. Many times, I do mathematical problems on one hand and on the other hand I may be listening to the music. This is pretty a case of multitasking. And now like you said, you feel liked you have missed some details. And here me too, I get very slow in doing the problems and yes I really miss some important things to remember in while doing the problems. This is what I miss while solving the problem. But on the other hand, I am also feeling the comfortableness of the music and also getting my job done hehe.... Well we are not perfect like the computers. And there is 100% possibility than we miss many things while multiprocessing. Somethings gets wrong surely when the concentration is reduced. Nice topic to discuss nympha687!!! Keep posting and see you again and again...

Hmmm..I multi-task as well. I guess its just a matter of how you multi-task. And from what your doing it seems like your accomplishing things..so no need to worry.

I think certain tasks require your full attention...say...something like brain surgery- i wouldn't want my brain surgeon talking to his wife on the phone, working on my brain and reading a magazine.. However, I think most people can and should multitask..I am a working mother of 3, multitasking is what gets me through!

One needs to be good at multi-tasking just to survive in today's world. What crenshaw probably meant was to focus on one job at a time. the time duration could be just few seconds too. It would serve no purpose if a task is done just for the heck of it, but if it's done with passion & dedication, a lot can be achieved. All great leaders like Gandhi, lincon etc were good at multitasking, just because they were passionate about the cause.
