Do you think people are overreacting to the Swine Flu?

I say yes and no. I think because it is a new strain of flu shooting around people want to be the first to report all the stuff and I think because even the doctors and scientists are learning more about it, with the reports out there it is making people confused. Like people are afraid to eat pork. It's spread through human contact (sneezing, and coughing). As for me I am loading up on echinacea and using my hand sanitizer more often. So what do you think?

People are only reacting to what they are hearing. I believe the media is overreacting and helping to spread fear throughout the entire populace. It is the media that has everyone whipped into a frenzy over this epidemic in the first place. I do believe we have a reason to worry about this but at the same time we shouldn't be whipped into hysterics because of the outbreak, which so far, has proven to be curable and somewhat containable. I hope this isn't a continuing trend, as of late, there have been all kinds of "outbreaks" involving diseases we haven't seen in a while (IE: Ebola, SARS, anthrax, etc...).

Yes, people are overreacting and it's because of the media. Swine flu should be renamed. You don't catch it from pork - it is spread by people. Yes, it's serious and you can become very sick and even die. But there are other diseases out there with the same dangers. I'm glad the Mexican government recognized the disease and didn't try to hide it. People should avoid going to Mexico until the flu strain is contained. But people travel all over the world now. I think flying by airplane to any location is unhealthy. The air on the plane is recirculated, and I doubt the blankets, armrests, pillows, and other items on the plane are disinfected after each flight. And of course, there's travel by ship, bus, train, taxi, etc. We can't avoid people. Stay home if you're coughing or sneezing and don't infect other people. Wash your hands often and try not to wipe your eyes and nose. Eat healthy, get enough sleep, and exercise. That's all we can do unless we want to be a hermit and never have any human contact.

Yes, I think the suggestions are very good and useful. We should improve our health and have a good mood. we should have the confidence that if we live a heathy life, we can overccome the swine flue.

I guess people still know few about the swine flu. Yes it is new and there are still a lot of studies needed to be done. For me I do not worry to much. As long as it is not yet here in Philippines I do not care that much. We are not eating meat for about a month now also because of the first news regarding ebola reston virus found in pigs. And even if they say that you just need to cook well the meat before you eat them still prevention is better than cure. Besides I an having more vegetables now than meat so that is good. It is not that we are afraid of meat but we just got tired of the news about it and also the fact that meat are more expensive than vegetables. I am not really afraid because here in house we are very cautious and we are clean and very careful in preparing foods.

Actually not.....people need to be careful about this flu and all the more it is increasing the anxiety of the people and putting all of them in a frenzy is because the doctors are not able to find any cure or vaccination for this flu so far.....and many are not even aware of it.....so i feel one must immediately get educated about this flu and must take all necessary precautions as soon as possible......watching leading news channel will do the needful...... Stay safe !!!!

i wouldn't necessarily say overreact. in actual fact, it must be blamed on complacency if anyone thinks so. this is a new virus and its claiming lives. that said, we shouldn't feel scared or panic. after the SARS episode a few years back, infrastructures and regulatory systems have been put in place and now its just a matter of getting them back into operations and creating awareness- such as being hygienic and refraining from pork coming from affected areas. remain vigilant everyone. do not over or under react. best of luck :)

hi, I do not think that the people are over reacting to the swine flu incident. well the scenario is such that it is better to worry and take the requisite precautions that to be otherwise. the out comes of the disease are indeed devastating so i think that the reaction that the disease is receiving is not over reaction. i think that panic will cause damage but that would influence economy and other things and all of them are less important than the loss of human lives.

Well, the virus has the potential to mutate into something worse...which is enough for concern in the first place, but it's not exactly enough to warrant us all freaking out and screaming -now-. Me? I'm just gonna eat more garlic, xD

I'm not sure what to think. If it's so bad then I'm going to stay that it must be deadlier than the usual flu we get here in winter? Or is it that it's transmitted super fast? I dunno I've got my kids washing their hands like crazy as I don't want to risk it just in case. But how is this swine flu any different than the bird flu? I would find it crazy to see us all walking about here in USA with masks on, though I wouldn't blame anyone to take that extra precaution especially the elderly and the very young.

I live in Cali so everybody here looks like they are on the set of House or ER. I'm sure there is some concern but to scare the crap out of people is not the thing to do.

I will say yes to this, because this is a new type of flu that i actually heard and know for the first time. How to get rid of it is one factor for me to be secured and knowledgeable about this sickness. It can also help other informed about the spreading of this flu. Just keep being clean and open your eyes with more information needed for it to be prevented. Stay clean and safe always

People are scared as this is a new thing. Sars in 2003 it killed many people and it was deadly, but it all of a sudden stopped out of nowhere. Ever since then people have been more aware of these human to human sicknesses. It has put a lot of fear into people's minds. Since it has only killed people in Mexico it leads me to believe that maybe the health care down there is not as great. But I believe we should still be cautious about this, as we don't know much about it.

You're right. According to the news, swine flu can spread through human-to-human contact. Eating pork would not in any way infect you. I think the best thing that we can do is to be very cautious and careful enough to our surroundings especially when going to crowded places. :-)

I will agree that the whole eating pork thing is ridicolous to worry about catching it that way. I am worried about swine but not catching it that way. I am worried about catching it at work, walmart, daycare, and in public around other sick people. Thats my only worries. Personally I am not afraid if I catch it cause I my immune system fights pretty good. However I am worried about my son because he gets sick alot as it is and I no his immune system may not be able to fight it off if he got it.

a lot of people think that is just something that the president put to get more attention over this than the economy problem that we have here what a considence that President Obama goes to visit Mexico and then two weeks later this comes up. I don't just make me think and a lot of people are over reacting it makes things exactly what they planned. I do think that a lot of the stuff that we see in TV is totally control and have a propose. what you guys think?

totally over exaggerated flu is a killer no matter what strain it is, but so can be the common cold if you are weak or with some sort of immune problem. Look at the percentages of people who have swine flu to the population head count its tiny in countries. Flu happens every year the basic strain, and people die every year of the basic flu strain but these are never reported. I am more concerned about meningitis than swine flu as we have a lot of cases of deaths through meningitis being in a city and prob the same as many cities around the world. I agree that people should be more hygienic as am amazed how many people dont cover their mouths when they cough etc etc. Tho cover your mouth with a tissue not your hand lol. These disease's run in cycle's its a constant battle to keep improving and finding new vacines as the bugs evolve. Tho also the more we use anti-bacterial agents the more the bugs will develope an immunity its evolution. Good old fashioned soap and water for me. Also a bit of sense is needed from the public be calm and be sensible and dont panic.
