What is the problem with the Department of Homeland Security?

United States

Last weekend on CNN, President Obama's Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano made it clear that she has no interest in controlling the U.S. border. When asked about illegal immigration, she stated that "crossing the border is not a crime per se". This remark from the person in charge of the agency charged with securing the border. When the border debate came to the forefront a couple of years ago, the American people made it abundantly clear that they wanted illegal immigration to be controlled. Now this administration has demonstrated that they will treat illegal immigration just like the Bush administration. A wink and a nod. In these economic times perhaps we would be better served by the jobs taken by these illegals going to U.S. citizens. If the economy is so bad that we need trillions of dollars to prevent the next Great Depression, then perhaps U.S. citizens should be out picking crops, working in textile factories etc... instead of relying on the government for a handout. Border security should be a priority. Use some of the trillions of dollars in government largess to put people to work building walls, and working nice border security jobs. The cost of illegals through welfare, identity fraud, education expenses, law enforcement costs, and the cost in U.S. citizens lives is staggering. Most people don't realize that the number of Americans killed by illegals last year is about the same as our losses in Iraq throughout the entire conflict. We need to control our borders and put in a workable system of documented alien workers. Make the companies that want to hire these workers sponsor and pay the fees to process them into the U.S.. By ignoring this illegal subculture, we do a disservice to ourselves and those attempting to better their lives by working in the U.S..

The SECOND problem is the people in charge of it. The FIRST problem is that it exists at all.

KLV, you don't have to control the border, you really don't even need the forces we have their already. The only thing we need is to end the reason why they are coming here. If we make the punishment for hiring illegals strict, and consistant you will eliminate illegal immigration 100%. If you make it a manditor year in jail, and $5,000 fine per illegal hired, you will see your problem solved. The problem is that neither party has the political power to do so. The hispanic community put Obama, and Bush in office, and they can't afford to lose that vote. When you saw the American people come out so loudly in support of the border fence, and then the president running away from the subject you knew something was wrong.

"When you saw the American people come out so loudly in support of the border fence, and then the president running away from the subject you knew something was wrong." one of the most astute things I think I have ever seen you say here.

X, the sad part is that this is just like social security, medicare, medicade, health care, tax system, and defense spending. No politican wants to touch them because it is to dangerous to your reelection, and legacy. All of theses have huge problems, need to be fixed, and will hurt the country untill they are. But, no one has the balls to say do anything about it.

I agree that we should have heightened border security, but we also need to have more reasonable ways for foreigners to gain work permits. As it is now, you pretty much need a college degree to get a work permit. Except, we don't really have a lack of people with college degrees. We do have a lack of people who can and are willing to work as hard as the Hispanic immigrants do. And sure, there is some work that illegals are doing that could easily be done by citizens, the main issue being that businesses can pay illegals less. Make it harder to become an illegal immigrant and a lot of our problems will be solved.
