Writing a column about gays being the military

So for my media writing class I have an op-ed piece due tomorrow on the topic of our choice and the main thing he wants us to do is find our own passions and our own voice. For me I love controversial topics and I'm not afraid to take a stand on them. In the past I've done columns on separation of church and state as well as not having to stand for the pledge in schools, so for this topic I decided to take another controversial stand dealing with the ban on gays being in the military - or at least openly in the military. So far my arguements are: 1. We need more troops 2. Women are hazards (relationship wise) there is no reason to use that for gays as well and say they can't be in 3. "All men are created equal" 4. Getting rid of the loophole of being discharged if you are openly gay So anything else to include in the topic or does anyone disagree so I can see more on that side?

There are things that make it difficult to have gays in the military. For example, common showers. If you're perfectly aware that THAT guy is gay, would you comfortable taking the shower with him? Women have their own showers and that's not a problem. What about sleeping in the same bunk bed? What about being lost in the woods together for days? We need troops, but we need our troops to be comfortable with each other in training grounds so they can trust each other when the fight starts. I'm not sure if I'm making any sense but that's the first concern I have. Thanks for the response on my discussion!
