Trying to self teach on the guitar

Has anyone ever taught themselves an instrument? I'm attempting to learn the guitar by myself and was wondering any tricks or words of encouragement.

I am a self-taught guitar player. My advice is, make sure there's no salt in your fingers when you play guitar. Otherwise, the strings will be destroyed or can be pulled-out easily. You could damage your eyes when it happens, ouch!
