Hi, I have been wanting to buy a laptop computer but they are very expensive unless I buy one that is refurbished and I was wondering if it is wise to buy refurbished computers/laptop? Have you bought anything refurbished and have it work fine and no problems? Thanks for any help in answering this for me. I just wanna know before I waste what little money I do have saved.

Refurbished is a term with broad definition. It is not always apparent what process the product has undergone in order to return it to "like new" condition. Sometimes it is only a matter of replacing the packaging. Other times the product might have been sent back to the manufacturer for repairs and components were replaced. Whether you take the chance on a refurbished item or not is likely going to be based on the discount on the item. If it is only a matter of a few dollars, then just go new. Some refurbished items come with a warranty. If the warranty is long enough, you may not be assuming much risk at all. I have purchased refurbished items before. Most never have any problems with them at all. Some have. In the cases where difficulties arise, if I can't return it for a replacement, I open up the product and fix it myself. Good luck with your purchase.

You are most welcome. You are probably right. For most people it is best to get items with a significant warranty length included. It can also depend on how much risk one is willing to absorb, how much of a price reduction has been given and whether or not you have the skills to fix products yourself if problems arise. Cheers.

it depends on the thing you want to buy, to be specific, the laptop, there's some of it which is less price but has a problem, either not functioning or incomplete accessories. just an advise, much better to save your money for a good one, its better to have it brand new than a second hand.. just an advise!

I have bought refurbished electronics in the past and had no issues with any of it at all. As long as the warranties stack up, I see no issues with buying products that are used and it can save a lot of money! Stick with the know brands and always make sure that the warranties cover you well because any major issues with a refurbished product will generally show up in the first month or so if there are any. Also make sure that parts are not discontinued or hard to get as well because you'll have issues fixing anything in the future if you buy a product that just isn't widely in the market anymore.

This has me second guessing buying off eBay and maybe looking for one at the few shops we have that deals with computers. That way I can check it out and see that it works and it probably would have a warranty better then I would find on eBay. Thanks for the response.

I have never bought anything refurbished. We have bought open box, something that was returned brand new. I heard that refurbished is quite good and that they do a better job then the new ones, but still I would rather use something that is new or something that is second hand.

Thanks for responding suspenseful, I really appreciate it. Most pawn shops that sell them second hand wipes their hard drives and sometimes they mess them up.. My mom learned her lesson of buying them from pawn shops that had the words No refunds...She lost out on $200 for the laptop and not including fees to get it checked out from a computer place and buying stuff that didn't help it.

Nokia 8210 - Bought a refurbished Nokia 8210 months ago and it was working fine.
Yes, i have bought a refurbished Nokia 8210. I have used it for months and there was no problem at all in terms of the functions and durability. I got tired of it so i sold it again. I have no regrets having that phone. I think to be safe, you should really test out all the functions of the laptop you are planning to buy. Check the screen, the keys, the peripherals and all the things important. You should also know a little background from the seller if he is reputable seller. Good luck!

Do floor models count? My husband and I bought a 27" Magnovox analog television that happened to be the floor model. We had been looking for a bigger screen TV than we already had. Anyway, we had gone to a few stores, and by the time we got to this particular store my husband was discouraged and didn't think we'd ever find a good deal. And if it hadn't been for me speaking up we probably would have passed this store right up. Anyway, we went in, not really expecting to find anything we liked. But then my husband saw a TV on display that he wanted. However, it wasn't in our price range. One of the employees there came up and spoke to us. He told us he'd give us a deal on the floor model (the one on display). I was hesitant because I worried that it might have gone through some abuse seeing it was the floor model. But the guy knocked $200 off the original price and my husband couldn't pass it up. So we bought it and took it home. That was over 15 years ago. I joke around and say it is like the energizer rabbit because it keeps going and going. Even after my oldest son hosed it down a couple of times, it still keeps right on going. And it works great! PS I see that this discussion is 4 weeks old. So, did you end up getting a laptop or did you decide to wait?

I decided to wait. Dig around a little more. Yes, I guess that would count. Now that is a great deal. I miss my floor model. It lasted almost 30 years before the picture tube blew and I think that is because it was being used to play games on it with a play station and I feel that if the kids hadn't started using it to play games on we would still have it.

Yep that is a long time but it was also when companies took pride in their televisions and their quality and you could expect long use out of something...now days it is made as cheap as they can make it but as high as they can sell it. I have been looking at a mini one that is reasonable. Be good enough to do the things I want with it..since I do have two working full size computers.

Have you thought about getting a netbook instead? It's like a laptop/notebook only smaller in size. And they aren't as pricey either (at least a lot of them aren't). I want to get one for my husband so that we can keep in touch when he's out of town for business. Wow, 30 years? That's a long time for a TV!

We got a refurbished computer about a year ago, and we love it! It's done beautifully, darlin. I have absolutely no complaints about it. It seemed brand new when it got here. Everything looked new, I swear. If this really is refurbished, and I don't really think so, it's a gem. Go ahead, I think you'll be fine, and if you want, I'll find out where we got this one and pass that info along to you. It might be a really good company to buy from. Just let me know.

If it comes with a warranty I'd take my chances and buy it because of the lower price. Make sre it has a sufficient amount of RAM so you can run your programs and enough storage as in Gigabytes.. I once bought a refurbished scanner which operated just fine.

Hey Joyce, thanks for responding to my discussion I appreciate it alot. I will certainly have to look for one that comes with a warranty if they offer one. I am thinking that if I could get a laptop my husband might not feel so left out all the time since I am stuffed in this computer room and him always in the front room. Will definitely have to check out what I will need before I purchase one. Thanks.

I have seen some one eBay that is quite reasonable I think, but I will have to check out about wireless cards and such since I will definitely need one with a wireless card. I have the router already so I am set up for that already. Thanks for responding I appreciate it. I wonder how much gigabytes someone would need for one?

I bought refurbished computer and laptop too. They work fine, but don't have everything that the new computers have. All depend on what you really need. What you're looking in a computer. A refurbished one can save you lots of money.A new one, costs much more - I agreee it's very nice to have a new one, but they need repairs too. I say go for a refurbished, but good one, It's better to go and buy it with someone who has computer knowledge and can check if it has the minimum required for your needs. A new computer also comes with lots of features that you won't use, so you don't need, and of course no need to spend the extra...

I have gotten a few things refurbished. Refurbished isn't as bad as it seems. Sometimes it is just being replaced by another model. Or they change coloring on a part of the logo. I recently bought a refurbished wireless printer that was refurbished and I love it. What a good deal. The same model was going for about $300, I bought a refurbished model that was 6 months younger and was only being considered refurbished because they decided to light up one of the keys. WOw. I saved about 75% getting the refurbished one. But you really have to do the research on the product that you are interested in. Good luck to you.

I have purchased a few things that were refurbished. The first one was a bread maker, that was a mistake!! It didn't mix right, so there was always a bunch of flour in the bottom of the pan that never got mixed in. Then there was the VCR/DVD combo, that was a really good buy. We love it!! I think we've only had it like 2 or 3 years and never had a problem with it. Then there was the surround sound, that worked really well too. We never had a problem in the year and a half we had it. We were moving pretty far, and a friend wanted to buy it off us, one less thing to move.

I have done some shopping on ebay, but nothing that was that much of a big ticket item. I have bought clothes, wall stickers for my son's room, other things for in his room, and a portable baby swing. I would be afraid that it would get broken in the mail or worse yet, it's broken when they send it but they blame it on the mail.

That is true.My sister in law bought one for her daughter off eBay for Christmas. My husbands niece bought two off eBay also for Christmas for her kids. They were fine but the seller is out of them now so I wouldn't really know much about what I would need to be looking for when I purchase one. My birthday is in July so I am thinking to just ask those who want to get me something in my family to just put towards a laptop instead. If that is what they want to do.So I will be trying to figure out what I need or want till then.

I think it would be better if you invest with a new one. There are a lot of laptops for sale now at a very low price. Gadgets, refurbished or not, has a lifetime. So if you buy a refurbished one now, it would not be as efficient or as fast as a brand new one. The probability that It will break down sooner is also a factor.

Sometimes buying a refurbished item is not quite what you expected or wanted. However I have purchased refurbished computers from both calibex and computergeeks.com and I have had great success with those computers. In fact I am answering your discussion on the refurbished HP/Compaq computer that I bought last year off of the calibex website. I don't know whether or not the fact that you want a laptop will matter in the final equation but when I boughtmy desktop it came with an 18 month warrantee and I added an additional 12 month warranty for $17.00 or something like that. So my warrantee is just over 2 1/2 years on a computer I paid 179.00 for.

Yes I have purchased refurbished electronics such as VCR's, DVD player and I have purchased a refurbished cell phone in the past. Most worked just as good and for a fraction of the price of those new out of the box. I did have a problem with one VCR that just did not work at all but the store was really good about exchanging or refunding my money. So I have had nothing but positive experiences with them.

I don't think all refurbished are that bad. I had one of desktop was refurbished product, and I used it for over 5 years, and I don't see any problem with it. I simply want something cheap and fine - working. Because I have to consider my budget, so I can't complain about whether I should get a refurbished or a brand new one.

I have no objections to buying a laptop or any other elecronics refurbished as long as they come with a valid warranty from the manufacurer. Most will still come with a one year warranty which is all most come with brand new. When you buy a refurbished item it should come in all the original sealed packaging as a brand new product. Most of the time you wouldn't even be able to tell if it wasn't for a stamp saying refurbished somewhere on the box. I bought a refurbished laptop 4 years ago and have no complaints. Just buy from a trusted store or site with a warranty.
