When you do something, do you always ask, what's in it for you?

We always do things for a reason. Sometimes because we need some favor in return. We say that there are people who are selfless who do things without asking anything in return, When you ask these selfless persons, they would answer that they achieve a different high when helping people. If you analyze deeply this answer, it points out to one glaring fact, that is is because their selfless actions make them achieve a different high. So in a way, it is still self-serving. In conclusion, there is really no genuine selfless act in the world. What are your thoughts on this? What do you think? Thanks for your comments.2 responses

I think you are wrong.....there are genuine selfless acts.....I do them all the time for my kids. I do things for them because I love them and I don't ask them to love me in return.....yes you get a high from helping others but I don't think that is self serving....I think it NICE.....being NICE doing for others is part of finding self contentment...and does help with your self esteem but I don't think it makes the act itself something you can call self serving.

Well, I guess it depends on your situation. If you are doing something for needy people then doesn't ask for anything in return or feeling high whatever. But if you are doing something for your friends, I think it's okay if you ask something in return. Even though, you are strongly suggested to do it sincerely. And I'm not talking about material but maybe a helping hand if ever you're in problem. Because people are supposed to support or help each other, right?
For your question about no genuine selfless act in the world, I think Mother Theresa qualify for it. Don't you think?
