Was the whitehouse burnt down in 1812 by canadians and then painted white?

I've heard rumours that the Whitehouse was burnt down by Canadians in the Battle of 1812. Is this true? The rumour i heard also said that it was blackened with soot then painted white and that's why they call it the Whitehouse to this day. Is this also true? If this is true why don't you hear about it more?
