Hi All.
I am just start working in finance industry for about 10 months now. In this period I found it hard to adjust my life from a uni student which seems to me was hard at that time (working on exam, homework, paper etc) to work life which requires to be on top performance all the time. In uni, at least you got your friends to back-up you. But in office, you have to be careful with all you said, many rumors that can ruin your reputation, or backstabbing friends that can attack your integrity. And also, being a fresh graduate sometimes I feel so stupid for my task, not knowing what to do for my project. Please share your experience here. Are you feeling the same?

Sophisticated boy,
Me, just like the previous comment. I used to work part time when I still at the uni. Besides the money thing, I would like to feel the experience of being an employee, therefore I did not find it too hard to adjust to this 'new life'. But anyway, there will be always a start for everything, so don't be afraid as long as you do your work as ordered, and my other advice is..don't stay too close with your work mate.. :)

Hi eltobh, yes I agree about don't get too close with my workmate. If u tell them big secrets, even it he/she is your office best friends, no guarantee she will not tell that to anyone.

Hi, i'm just about the same as you. I've just graduated from Uni last year, and have been start working for 9 months plus until now. I'm working in a multinational company (erm..not to mention which company here). Working life is indeed very much different from study life. In working life, we've to be always alert and response fast, and try to perofrm whenever there's a chance to. This is to market ourselves, in order to get promoted and be respected, which is the game's rule nowadays (This is what my manager told me).
Actually, i'm not really like this. I'd prefer to work on my pace, and do not need to always compare or compete with others. However, i know if i'd continue to be like this, my career path will not be as smooth as i want, haaha..

Yeas, we should stay alert all the time. And I think it is also important to keep updated about what happened in the world. As an employee in finance industry, I regularly check financial wensite such as bloomberg, FT, etc. So if somebody wants to discuss that topic, I can respond it and not just being a listener. Right now, I have a tight peer of friends that also working in finance industry. I believe I can trust them to tell stories because 2 of them are in different dept, and another two coming from another companies. We help each other so far, and of course have fun together

It's quite normal to feel "stupid" on your first job, in the first couple of months. The feeling would subside as you learn more about what they expect from you and what you can actually do better than others :) You just have to stick it through. As long as you have peace of mind, then you're good there. Handling backstabbing colleagues is pretty easy - just be nice :D And be sure that they wouldn't be able to say anything bad about you. If you're a boring nice person, then they'd move on to the next new comer.
Thanks for the response on my discussion!

I tried being a student and a part time worker at the same time when I was in my fourth year college. I decided to work part time because I wanted to experience the feeling of earning your own money and supporting your own expenses. I wanted to know how hard it is to do two things and being engaged in two activities. I was able to excel in both fields and that is what I owe with my skill in time management. I guess that part time job prepared me in the real world of being a worker. I never had a difficulty when I got my first real job just a month after I graduated. Yes i know that being a student has also ups and downs especially when you have exams and projects and you have deadlines. You have your loyal friends to depend on and you can always help each other. But in a job it is really very hard to trust. That is one things I found when I got my work. You can't just trust anyone. It affects a lot of your personality. Unlike when you are a student having friend with some of your classmates is just fine and acceptable. But in a job you can't impress everyone. There are also lots of envious worker who will do everything to pull you down. So I guess we should all be careful because we will all end up as workers. Not a forever student. That is life and we should be strong enough to find ways to solve our problems in our jobs. That is our main source of living and we can't avoid it.

You giving a information to me is nervous. yean, we must work in earnest but not nervous. If you try your best, why do you care about others or others' view to you ?
Of course,i will not make friends with my colleagues or leader, because they are only working associate.

Of course, you must to be careful, why? you are carrying the reputation of the companies you're working for. You're just learning the real life from the begining. You entered in that job and you must to know it. How did you got your job if you don't know what to do?
