Well you definitely don't have to be an Einstein in this day to see that our economy is going down the s-h-i*tube, so many people are losing their jobs, the middle class is suddenly wondering where all there money went, and how their going to get by, my mother for example, someone who worked as a registered nurse for 20 plus years, is now not working, and pretty much refuses to work...apparently oddly enough she's never really "liked" helping sick people. But she was telling me the other day how she was at the unemployment office and was surrounded by all these poorer people, one in fact was in her twenties and had a colostomy bag (i'm butchering that) and had a toddler with her. The young woman asked "Are you on foodstamps yet?" my mother said "No..." And the idea of it made it sink in that she might have to go to that level, but I'm here to help, with the little I make, so I'm just wondering how many other people in the middle class are finding it hard to make ends meet.

I actually hate to say that my husband is in sales and his sales are booming currently. His sales have almost doubled since the start of the economic downturn. I see my family struggling and it makes me sad I try to help them as much as I can since we have so much extra right now. We should start to feel the economic downturn towards its end. So when we are poor I'll let you all know it's over

ZephyrSun, I have to ask out of curiosity...what kind of sale is your husband in? I'm happy to hear that some folks are actually doing well in these troubled times. And I know there has to be some folks making money somewhere. But other than people in the medical fields, I just don't know of very many.

He sells oil and tires for a big company in my city. The months of January and Feburary are very hard on us because he sells to construction, farms and trucking companies and this year our monthly income was up $600 from last year. And, no he doesn't get a raise he works on 100% commission.

I'm a single mom and I'm not on food stamps yet. I do still have a job tho so I'm lucky in that respect. It is a struggle sometimes but so far my daughter and I have gotten by without resorting to that.

we are hanging on by an absolute thread. we are heading in the direction of needing some kind of help and food stamps will be the first place i look as i do not think we would be eligible for much more. i have cut back on everything and anything and moved credit card balances to 0% interest cards and on and on and i am running out of ideas and options so food stamps may be in our future. thank goodness there are programs like that out there for people who actually do need help sometimes. others abuse the system in a big way and it makes me angry.

I'm very happy to say that we're doing ok so far during this recession. We're lucky that both my husband and I have kept our jobs so far and things are looking pretty good. Still, you never know...It's scary to see how many people are having to resort to things like food stamps, when they never would have thought it would come to that. I really hope we can continue to make ends meet. By the way, you spelled colostomy right! :)

The recession is not having any effect on me. I did lose my job as a Subway Manager (the owner sold the store) but then with in a few days I got another job as a subway manager. I am able to get more hours at my new job so I am able to make a lot more money. I actually make double now. Luckily I don't need to use food stamps.

If someone is truly trying to improve themselves and doing their part to find a better job, to support their family I have no issues with Food Stamps or Goverenment assistance, if however it is being abused I have MAJOR issues. I see no need for my husband and I, well I am sahm but you get the point, to pay for someone not to even attempt to do something to help them selves out. Like the cousin of mine who is on food stamps but just went out and purchased himself a $500.00 cell phone, really a $500.00 cell phone and he is on food stamps. that pisses me off.

Hi Callie.....My husband and I are both on disability because of health issues. I have fibtomyalgia (advanced) and my husband had a heart transplant 3 years ago. We are on a fixed income and know what we are getting each month, but we do not qualify for food stamps so we just eat what we can afford. I don't know how some families are making it with the big house payments and all the children and maybe some of them in college, and guess what that is what the food stamp system is for....the working man that needs help up while he is down and should be used for that. It is not nice having to go to a job everyday that you hate in order to live, but you do what you have to do. I went to one for 35 years before I became disabled and I hated it more and more each day, but my family and I needed the benefits that I got from working the job so I did it. Now just like you I am here to make a little bit and it even helps if I can make enough to pay my internet payment each month. I say Good Luck people and keep fighting,,,we may be broke but we are still fixable. flutterby
