A virgin garden

If all works out to plan, I will shortly be moving to a house with a virgin garden. I'm looking forward to getting it going and think I have learnt from my past mistakes here. But I'd love to have some tips from myLot gardeners. What would you advise?

Take the time to plan and to work you soil before you plant, I know the temptation is to start planting right away. But resist temptation and do it right.

Thanks Pa. I'm sure that's really good advice.

I have just moved house, but we haven't got a virgin garden at this time, but a few years ago we did. It seems that most things can be grown without fertilizer as the soil is fresh and full of nutrients. It tends to be hard work digging it over though, but you can create it the way you want it to be. I hope it gives you lots of pleasure in the years to come = Derek

Thanks Derek. I doubt it will be me who does all the digging. As husbands always say about dishwashers, I don't keep dogs and bark myself.

I think its important to mulch your plants to retain moisture to the soil, have adequate drainage under each plant so the roots dont rott in stagment water and grow a variety of different plants to see which grows better in your soil and environment. regular water and fertilizer is essential.
