Losing Weight: What Is The Most Challenging Thing?

One thing we have to face when losing weight is that there is no easy way to go about with it. For me, my biggest challenge is HUNGER. Not giving in to my hunger is one of the most difficult thing ever. I know that I should not let my hunger control me, but there are days when it's just so hard to eat until you're satisfied. It was especially hard during the first two weeks, particularly after working out. I do not like giving in to my hunger because this could result to binging. To this challenge, I make sure that I do not starve myself. I eat little meals during the day. It helps, big time. How about you? What is the most challenging part of losing weight? How did you deal or how are you dealing with it?

We (sharra1 and I) get around the hunger issue by not changing quantity but by changing content. We have substituted meals of decent soup with a piece of toast for heavier meals like roasts and rich stews. If hunger strikes, we usually have fruit on hand, or cold hard-boiled eggs, and sometimes left-over cold roast chicken or meat or cold grilled sausages cut into bite size pieces and stored. Seven days in every 28 we revert to our old diet, but over the month I hit about 1500 - 1600 calories and she to about 1200. With the exercise it works well. I have lost 17.25 kgs/38 lbs and she has lost 7 kgs/16 lbs in 5 months. sharra has health issues which make exercise more difficult for her. Lash

She suffers Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. The eggs are only an example, I'm sure you could find something to substitute that's filling and low-cal, although off the top of my head I can't think of one lol. Go with fruit. Lash

The cold hard boiled eggs will be another challenge for me. I don't like how it smells. I must've gotten this reaction to it because my brother eats four of those each time. I really don't like how it smells. Thanks so much for all the helpful stuff you've mentioned. I'll work on 'em and hopefully it helps me with my program. Does Sharra have a thyroid condition?

The biggest challenge for me so lose weight is not to give into tempetation for all the fattening food in the house. When you have other family members that can eat anything in the house it is so hard. Also, last weekend I was out of town so I didn't watch my diet and so it has been hard to go back on my diet. But, I am starting back on it today.

My family supports me in losing my weight but when you have younger family members they still want all of the fattening food still in the house.

I couldn't agree with you more. Yes, it is very hard to stay on a diet or to eat healthy if you have family members who are not into that kind lifestyle. In this case, the saying, "If you can't beat them, join 'em" is not appropriate. I think that if they know that there is a family member who is trying to lose weight, family members should be there to support that person :)

I think for me initially it was about finding balance. I'm still learning balance, so that I am healthy. You shouldn't be hungry, though. Something I've learned over the last year is that we need to make sure we're getting enough proteins, carbs, etc. If we eat a well balanced meal, we won't have those hunger pains. I agree with 6 small meals a day. Eating every 3 hours is a good guage, keeps blood sugars stable, and keeps the metabolism working. I also found that if I drink enough water throughout the day I'm less hungry. And I never give up sweets anymore. I eat less of them portion wise but I always allow myself something sweet and find that I'm not binging. Namaste-Anora

Thanks for the BR. Just remember it's all about balance. You need enough protein in your diet to feed your lean muscle mass. You also need the proper carbs to create the right level of glucose in your system for your body to work. Every person is different. However, the food pyramid is a good starting point in terms of just an overview of what a proper balance looks like. Though, find out for yourself which foods cause you to gain weight, feel hungry, etc. Those foods that don't do that are the ones you want to eat more of. And yep, I still eat sweets. I just don't eat the full pan anymore lol. I find that if I keep the pantry stocked of those little treats I am having them only once a day. Good luck to you. Namaste-Anora

Really? You could still eat sweets? Wow! I am amazed. I'll try to incorporate what you're doing to what I'm doing. Thanks so much for the tips :)

It is hard to battle the hunger when you are dieting. It is my weakness so I can't lose weight up to now. I'm not starving myself I want to cut down the amount of what I ate before. I think it needs a lot of motivation and determination to be able to achieve weight lose. I think I'm going to change my eating habits and I'm going to exercise more. I hope by this month I'm going to lose some.

I lose weight mainly by a lot of working out! People say they don't have time...Make time. It can be soo much fun too. Find a good gym with friends and different classes. A tip with eating...Water! Drink a glass of water before you eat. Then eat a healthy yet satisfying meal. I really don't think anyone should do those ridiculous diets. You get that weight back eventually in some way shape or form.

It's just too bad if one has a sedentary lifestyle so it is really important to work out. The water tip is awesome, thanks for sharing that one.

My challenging is Motivation. About hunger is ok to me cuz I can stop eating but about motivation is totally weak. However, I never plan to loose weight cuz I already in shape. I used to gain weight during my college years but after I married and have two kids, I just dont know why I always loose weight. Especially right after I have a baby. Now, I weight 105lbs and wear size 0.

That is great! Wow. Your metabolism might be the reason why you're not gaining weight. It seems that you're happy with your current weight and dress size... so keep it up :)

I agree, feeling hungry really bothers me. I used to be really skinny (too skinny even) when I was younger, and sometimes I would go without eating and I don't even know why (laziness?)... These days, cutting back the fats isn't too hard, but cutting back portions is a bit more challenging. I try to eat more slowly now, use smaller plates, and eat high-fiber and healthier snacks like fruits rather than greasy chips or something. I HATE feeling hungry. Also, I am not very motivated to exercise, I have lots of stuff to do all the time and would rather sit online than do something healthier like walk around the block. I have tried having exercise partners but that only usually lasts a few weeks. : / I wish there was an easier way. (To lose weight AND win the lotto!) I only want to lose about 15 pounds. Hopefully by the end of the summer I will have succeeded in my goal, and best wishes to you as well.

for me is keeping away from simple sugars. just imagine your leaving your work area or going out for lunch and all of a sudden, there's an impromptu bake sale going on and their selling all sorts of delicious cupcakes and muffins all covered in sugary colorful icing and i just can't take my eyes off of them. i want one in my mouth but i can't indulge on it. so what i do is i never leave my office building! i eat in the building or i pack food from home. never leave!!!

Oh gosh. That IS hard. It's good that you manage not to leave your building. I hope your workmates aren't the type who eat every so often. In my last job, people ate every two hours, almost every two hours -- and these aren't just little snacks they're eating. I'm not sure if they eat breakfast before coming to work, but here's the "eating schedule": 08:00AM Breakfast @ the Caf 10:00AM Mid-Morning Snack 12:00PM Lunch 03:00PM Afternoon Snack 06:00PM Another Meal For some the 6PM meal is their dinner, but others still have dinner when they get home. It's good if they're eating little meals, but they eat full meals each time. I have been tagged as "anti-social" before because I always beg off when they ask me to eat with them. Hahaha.

My biggest problem is hunger too! I really hate to have to watch everything that I eat. The big problem is what we eat, yeah, the diet stuff is not as tasty, but there are somethings that have came along way. The weight watchers stuff is really good, the eclair is awesome! If you diprive yourself, you will be more likely to fail for sure. I still have one day when I diet that I will allow myself what I want, I just don't go nuts ;) Or if I do eat too much Italian, I make sure that I walk an extra lap the next day. It really does have to more of a lifestyle change, not just a few weeks of starvation. Good Luck!

Deprivation isn't really healthy. As you said, you are more likely to fail. It is good to set one day wherein you can eat the stuff that you like, but it is pertinent that they be eaten in moderation. Cheers to lifestyle change and goodluck too :)

Losing weight is a daydreaming to me. I wanna be a slim girl, but i never set up any plan for it. For example, if i have lunch little,i must have dinner much more,I think i cann't defeat the hunger.I think the most healthy way to lose weight is to take more exercise and keep good diet.

Exercise and a healthy diet is the way to go. It will also be helpful if you keep a fitness journal with you. In that way, you can monitor your activities and the food that you eat. Goodluck!

Hunger has never been a problem in my weight loss quest. I make sure I eat enough foods so that I am not hungry. The trick to this is making sure you get enough protein and fiber! They both make you feel full and help you to feel full for a long time. To get enough fiber and still keep your calories low is easy - fruit is a great source! A tasty sweet snack that will help you stay full and doesnt have too many calories! The hardest part for me has been the emotional battles. Not getting disappointed when I havent lost as much weight as I would like. Finding a balance between my normal activities and still getting enough exercise in. It has also been difficult to find things that I will be able to continue to do for the rest of my life so that I dont put the weight back on! It has been a several month battle so far - and I still about about 20 pounds to go. I just take it one day at a time and remind myself that I am stil moving in the right direction. Physically, losing weight has been easy for me - as long as I can keep my motivation up and my disappointment down!

You can do it DerlilaStern. It may be a long battle, but what matters is that you're working hard on what you want. I'm sure that in the end, it will all be worth it. And yes, try not to be affected by disappointments. All the best to you...

Losing weight has never been a problem, I have lost about 10,000 pounds in my life and gained back about 20,000 pounds. It is the keeping it off that is the challenge.(chuckle)

Of course, hunger is the most challenging thing. I have tried to loss some weight but it is really difficult to control my desire of food. I like meat, but I need to have very little vegetable and fruit. It is a hard time. Finally, I found it is unworthy for me to loss so much funny in life to loss weight...And then I think health is more important so I do more sports and eat as usual. But if you really want to loss weight by control eating, I have heard a method which may help you. You may have little meals for 3-4 days and then have a opulent lunch once. It seems that one or two opulent lunch in a week do not influence losing weight and it help you be content for food.
