Rose is partially right in her sarcastic way. The name "swine flu" has caused fear of pork products and cost the U.S. money in exports and other countries money in needlessly destroyed pigs. In addition, this particular strain of the flu has components of bird flu in it so there was a potential threat to the poultry industry of several countries as well. Once the exact strain was identified, it received a scientific name which the media was encouraged to use, however, no one can force them to use it.
To protect yourself do what you would to protect yourself from catching any flu. Wash your hands often. Don't touch your face unless you hands are clean. This virus can live on surfaces so always wash your hands when arriving home after being in public and wipe down or spray your front door knob with disinfectant. Avoid crowded areas if you can and people who are obviously ill. If you are sick, stay home, drink plenty of fluids and get as much rest as possible. Taking extra vitamin C before and during can help.
