In the sentence "By late August public interest had shifted from the economy to Gary Condit, the California congressman whose less-than-forthcoming statements about a missing young woman dominated the nightly news." I need an explanation of "less-than-forthcoming".Thanks.

I believe it means that he held back information they would have preferred he give and that the information he did give was not something he did willingly. That is how I take the meaning of that phrase.

it more or less means he wasn't giving much information in the statements he did give.talking in circles to avoid giving an answer.

"less than forthcoming" Meaning that the statements made was not informative enough for them.
