Once a dog attacks another dog....

Well, I just witnessed something I couldn't even had imagined seeing. Our neighbor has 2 dogs. One is a pit bull and the other is a smaller dog. the pit bull attacked and I believe killed the small dog while they were outside in the back yard together. Now, I don't really want a debate or alot of responses discussing whether leaving these two dogs out together was a mistake and so on. My question is after a dog, any type or breed attacks another dog like in this manner, is the dog ok to be around people? Obviously you couldn't have it around another dog, but is this attack a sign of it's temperment gone bad?

I think it is probably safe to be around the dog. I'm sure I'd keep my eye on him though. Dogs can sense fear & might respond to that fear. It is possible the little dog did something to provoke the big dog...not just the big dog suddenly becoming bad.

I have seen dogs snap at other dogs and bear their teeth. I just was shocked be the ferociousness of what I saw.

I personally would never feel comfortable around any animal that I witnessed kill another animal. I wouldn't ever be able to relax around it...constantly wondering if it would attack me or my children.

If it was my dog, I don't think I could keep it. The whole ordeal was just scary.

I agree with you there! There's just no way I could keep it. My family is my top priority....even if the dog was a family member I'm sorry....kids come first.

I have always heard once they taste blood it is hard to get them to resist the temptation again. Not sure if it is true but I would believe if they will attack another animal a small child probably wouldn't be safe around them. Like I said I'm not sure, as I'm no expert but do know I wouldn't allow my child to be alone with any dog that had attacked anything previously.

When my brother and his wife were expecting their baby I insisted we put up a 6+ foot privacy fence because of the dog. He didn't do much to us except make alot of noise, but we only had a 4 foot chain link and I just had nightmares of his toddler aggitating the dog on a bad day and that dog flying over the fence.

I personally would not want to be around the dog after that. I really would not want another dog around it. If it was a dog owned by someone else the dog would probably be forced to be put to sleep, but since the same person owns both dogs I don't know what would happen.

A co-worker said I should have called animal control. She pointed out that the dog could be dangerous if it ever got out of the yard. I don't know, there's a part of me that thinks any dog could be dangerous out on the loose. If I had gotten home 30 minutes later, I wouldn't have known anything happened.

The dog seems to be the very bad tempered dog. But they can be very good to scare of the thieves, that's why one can keep them in the house but should be very much careful. Specially if they have children in home, it can be too much dangerous and can even be the threat to life. I had read another discussion here this morning about the attacking of the dog to the child. At least, I am very much afraid of this kind of dog. And specially, when I have seen the dog killing the other dog, I won't start liking the dog frankly. Though I may keep it in the house, but I will always feel too bad about the nature of the dog.

I would be and am, afraid that the dog could attack again. I don't think, if it was my dof, that I could keep it.

i have three dogs and the two older dogs are always jealous with my puppy now. They often fight with my new pup. Though my pup is a bit shocked and shaken about the incident i do spend time with them since they are my dogs in the first place. Regarding the dog killing another dog that's a different story i think. The dog might have need professional attention because of it.

Yea, I don't know what they are going to do. We aren't really close. I have always been leary of the dog.

It was a matter between those two dogs. The pit bull must have his reasons for killing him mate. You never know but as long as they are not attacking us, it is all safe for us.

I would think twice about letting that dog come within 5 feet of me if i knew it killed another dog. fights are one thing. all animals fight one another at some point. I've seen video of spider monkeys going at it on National Geographic. a domestic animal killing another domestic animal just seems like too much drama.

Well, we have a tall privacy fence around our yard and our neighbors do also. But today a co-worker put the question to me of what about if the dog got out of the yard. That has me thinking all kinds of things.
