Shakespear asked the quetion.. What's in a name. A rose by any other name may smell just as sweet, but it's funny how different the outcome when a name is associated with a person.
One of the wonders of sites like Facebook is how they bring the people from our past back into our lives. People who haven't been an active part of people's lives for decades are brought back together, even if they are miles, nations or even oceans apart. Some of the names that have appeared in "friend requests" belong to people I haven't seen since 1st or 2nd grade. (to put that in perspective, I'm talking the late 60s).
No matter how many "Mary's", "Bill's", "Jenna's" (or any other first name) I've known, when they appear as a freind request along side there last name, memories of them come flooding back. In some cases, the last name isn't even needed to trigger the response. Watching TV, listening to the radio, or driving down the street, a name will pop out of nowhere and BOOM, the flood of memories breaks down the dam of history and welcomes the old friend back to mind.. if only for a few minutes.
A name is just a sound our parents hung on us at birth.. but once that name and the face are combined with a few memories (good or bad), there is no changing the smell of that rose... even when the name is Rose. ;~)

There was once something I read in which the author said that it is by naming we ruin and dissect what something is. So once we name a flower a flower, we've ruined it. So I agree with Shakespeare that a name is just a name, but the thing is still a thing and will always remain that thing regardless of what we call it. Another author also stated that even if we look at something from a different side, it still is. The example they gave is if we were walking with a friend between us, one would see the right side, the other the left side but it would be agreed that the friend was still the same friend.

Probably in this case Shakespeare just wants to point out a different view point of naming his creations. But there is certainly another point of view. For instance, rose is named as Rose, its all because of its beauty. Rose it self is a beautiful name.It really doesn't matter much if we call rose as jasmine. But the beauty of the name Rose certainly comes into trouble. So,I personally believe that the beauty of the rose can be described by the name rose only,it cannot be replaced by sunflower, jasmine or lily.
