Freshly Cut Grass - the smell of freshly cut grass

Spring arrived finally! And in fact, it's almost feeling like summer too. Today, in my townhouse complex, the hired gardeners are mowing the lawns. I guess this means they'll be here every Wednesday until late fall. Although I hate the sound of the mowers and blowers, today, I have rediscovered my LOVE of the smell of freshly cut grass! It brings me to thoughts of summer, and fun, and sunshine, and swimming, and friends, and laughter, and all good things. How does the smell of freshly cut grass affect you? Do you like it? Does it bring back any specific memories, or any memories in general?

I really do love this smell too! I can't say I particularly dislike the sound of someone mowing the garden either because I connect it with people being out and about and that is generally quite a nice feeling for me. But coming back to the topic, freshly cut grass has a smell like nothing else, it is a unique, fresh and almost 'happy' smell if that makes sense!

"Happy smell" makes PERFECT sense to me! The mower that is used here at my complex is one of those heavy duty riding ones. They are NOISY! I don't mind the mower sound when it's a small one, and especially if it's not immediately next to me lol.

That would be cool to have a lawn tractor - our garden is not big enough though! They do look like a lot fun

Sometimes the mowers make too much noise because they are packed with dried grass. We had a neighbor who had one like that...It was just a small old Craftsman and you could hear it miles away. My husband is a mechanic (was a mechanic - we are retired) and he would just shake his head saying she needs to clean out her mower deck! I love mowing on our lawn tractor. It's a big machine and I like to know that I can control it!

It reminds me of how much I hate yard work! Actually, last summer I was responsible for maintaining my father's lawn--all 2+ acres of it! Actually I got a killer tan (when there's no chance of anyone seeing you, you mow topless because you're out there for at least four hours!) but it took so much of my time last year! I'm so glad I have a landlord now!

Wearing a sweaty bra or t-shirt are not my idea of fun! And because the job took more than four hours to do, I'd often end up dripping with sweat--icky! I'd be lucky to finish it then go in, grab a shower and collapse! But no one ever saw me--at a themed event the chances of discovery are that much greater!

LOL... that's a LOT of lawn mowing! Topless, eh? I thought you said you were too conventional in my themed event discussion? LOL!!!

Like you I really love the smell of freshly cut grass. I'm not exactly sure if it's nice memories that it brings or it if somehow it just affects me so positively that my mood improves by a few degrees:) I don't think I necessarily remember good things when I smell it, although in a deeper level it might, but it's just one of those things that brings me a sense of well being and happiness.( just like the smell of the ocean does to me as well )

ah... the waves.... :):):):)For 25 years I lived so close I would go to sleep with that wonderful sound everyday. I miss that so much! And the ocean has this special smell that even now, over 20 years after I wake up and think I'm still smelling it sometimes.

The smell of the ocean... I can't relate to that one too deeply, as I've only been near them a few times in my life, and only for short vacations. But the SOUND of waves lapping on the shore... oh yeah... TOTAL relaxation and happiness that brings to me!

We are in Tennessee and have been cutting grass for the last month. I love the smell. It is a fresh clean smell early on in the season. By September-October it smells different, more like straw. My parents owned a summer home on the eastern shore of maryland and the smell of grass takes me back to those days when life was simple and easy and people were kind to each other.

That's a beautiful memory! I haven't thought that there may be a different smell of the cut grass at different times in the grass cutting season. Hmmmm. I'll have to make a conscious effort to compare at the end of the summer and into fall.

Another thing Canadagal - we have regular grass that was planted in our backyard and in the front is really weeds (green but weeds) and the grass smells totally different from the weeds. Our property was cow pasture many many years ago I guess. We see the remains of wire fencing to keep cows from wandering too far. I love cutting grass.

I don't like the spring thaw smell. Mostly because I know it's usually thawing dog poop and other unmentionables. lol.

I adore the smell of freshly mowed grass. I always have. I remember as a teen when Herbal Essences came out and their shampoo smelled like grass. I used tons of bottles of their shampoo. They changed their fragrance in it, so I switched. I find the sound of a lawn mower sooo soothing. I remember as a kid when my dad would mow the lawn I would get sleepy and the next thing I knew I was asleep. To this day lawn mowers have the effect on me.

Ah yes... the mowing sound can make me sleepy too... if at a distance. It brings back memories of basking in the sun in the summertime, relaxing.. not a care in the world. Ahhhhh

I can't imagine city life where there is no grass nearby. Even when I grew up in Toronto, there were tons of parks around.

I really love that smell of freshly cut grass! I guess when this scent caresses your nostrils then you know that summer is very near if it hasn't arrived already. I guess that there are memories that I have in the past. When I was a small child I used to linger around the garden with my good old dad and he was forever cutting the grass, I really enjoyed those days. Well, summer is almost here now and I'm sure looking forward to receiving that long awaited smell once more. Andrew

That's too bad you can't smell it. Unless of course, you're allergic or don't like the smell... then it's a GOOD thing.

i live in tx and it rained for two weeks almost straight, my grass was so tall, i love the smell of grass being cut, brings me back to when i was a little girl with my dad, sitting on his lap on the riding lawn mower while we cut the grass. he even let me steer, i remember the first time he let me drive the way the grass looked when i got done. still brings a smile to my face.

I haven't experienced this smell for AGES! When I think about the smell though, the first thing that comes to mind is me having a sense of accomplishment because it means I've just finished mowing my own lawn! It was never a job I enjoyed very much at all and I even did it for extra cash too, so you can imagine how motivated I was doing THAT job. The end result was always a pleasure to behold, but man the journey to get to that point sucked!

I hope for you, that when you DO get to experience that smell again, that it will be with a much happier memory than that of work. Granted, that feeling of accomplishment is really powerful. I get that with doing laundry and dishes.. so I tend to enjoy those tasks because of that fact.

I sneeze, I sneeze, I sneeze! I have terrible allergies to most grasses so I try to avoid newly cut grass. It smells great but makes me feel just awful.

Hi CanadaGal, Luckily I do not suffer from hayfever and absolutely adore the smell of freshly mowed grass, I even go out and collect lumps of it up and put into the rabbit section the garden for them, saves on buying meadow hay for them LOL. The memories it brings back for me is rolling down the hills getting covered in the stuff and mum getting annoyed and me laughing, tomboy at heart I guess LOL. Huggles.Ellie :D

The smell of fresh cut grass gives me severe asthma attacks. Not sure why, it wasn't a problem when I was younger, but now when I hear the mowers goign I have to rush into my house and shut the windows or spend a good chunk of my day breathing through a nebulizer. I'm still happy that spring has sprung though!

My neighbor was just trying to cut the grass yesterday! We had several days of really warm weather followed by several days of gentle rain. All of the grass has grown like crazy! So while there was a break in the rain, my neighbor tried to tame his lawn. Every 5 minutes, the mower would cut out because it was so clogged with grass! He did finally get through it all - just in time for the rain the rest of the week! I also like the smell of fresh cut grass. It just seems so fresh to me. The fresh cut hay fields are the best, though. Depending on what kind of hay they are growing, it is sometimes quite sweet smelling. Just makes the warm weather that much more luxurious! I remember being a child and always having to rake grass if we waited too long to cut it. My Dad would use the mower to cut all of the grass. We would come behind him with the wheelbarrow and rakes. The thing I remember the most was always have bare feet while we did this. By the time we went inside, my feet were always stained green. I thought that was the coolest thing ever!
