I have the same problem, I'm not a fast chopper but what I do is suck on a tea spoon while I'm chopping the onions and I don't cry. Try it next time to see if it works for you.

My boyfriend and I actually argued about this and made bets and found out the answers as to how to make yourself stop crying when cutting onions. He said that if you cut them under cold water the smell wont get in the air and irritate your eyes. I said if you bite on the end of a match (the match head pointing outward, not lit, of course) that you wont cry because of the sulfur in the match. While both of these are said to work, the only PROVEN thing that works is to chew gum while cutting the onions. I still maintain that the match trick works, and my boyfriend still swears up and down about cutting them under cold water, but the only thing that was scientifically proven was chewing gum. I can't remember the exact reason, though.

Yes, it is because of the fumes or liquids coming out of the onion and goes straight into our eyes, simply because it is being juiced out. Since they are light, it will definitely go up and since you are looking down, the fumes tends to go into your eyes. Put it on a freezer for a couple of minutes and it is good to go. Other suggestions like sucking on a teaspoon works too, because the fumes go there.

I really love onions. When I have onions I feel I can live for ever. I know it’s silly, but I can not stop thinking onion and mushroom like that. The problem is every time I cut onions I have tears. It’s very uncomfortable. I watched a program talking about it. It said the smell of onions spread by air and hurt our eyes. The way to stop it is to have a candle on when you cut onions. I don’t know it works or not. I have never tried it. I think I will buy a food processor soon to help me with the onion problem.

Yup, I ended up crying every time I have to slice an onion. My eyes gets teary because of the sulfuric acid that an onion has. What to do?well, you better not slice an onion at all if you don't want to end up getting teary eyes. If you'll try to slice fast, it's possible that if you're not a professional then you might cut your own hands and that's a more worse case. If you don't want to get teary-eyed because of it then AVOID it.:)Happy MyLotting!

hai, yah it is big problem to them who are connected with kitchen. i seldom go to cook. but i know what is the best way to slice an onion. keep your hand and onion under water and slice it. there is an another way, keep an onion on the point of your knife and then slice another one. i have experience from the first one. but the second one, i don't know is it truth or not. try it.
