Selling on Craigslist, no, I WON’T mail you the item to Nigeria!

Seriously? I placed an ad on Craigslist, trying to sell my camera, still good, but I got a cute little red one now, with better MPs, and SO light! But we’re not talking about the new one, we’re talking about the old one. It’s a HP M525, still a good model, 6 MP, silver color, uses rechargeable batteries, etc, I offered 40 bucks for it, I listed what community I live in, I made sure the correct province was selected, blah blah blah. The first 2 offers I got? I’ll send you the money via paypal, and I want you (no request, straight with the demanding, gee, THAT’S a good sign) to mail this to my brother/friend in Nigeria. The first one I said, alright, great, I’ll do that, BUT what I need from you is your paypal address, and the Mailing address that I would be mailing this to, so that I can get you the shipping charge as well, to include on a paypal invoice I will send to your PAYPAL address. First reply from the first person? Mailing address, no paypal email. My SECOND hint that this may just be a scam, my first was the whole, “But you have to mail it to my brother/friend in Nigeria.” SO, I tried to get a quote for him anyways, using the address they provided, and the address didn’t work. GREAT. So I replied, “Hey dude, the address doesn’t want to give me a quote, AND I STILL need your paypal email address to send you an invoice. Only way I’m doing this.” Their response, “Oh, so sorry, here is a different address, try this, and what is your email address so that I can send you the money. COMPLETELY ignoring my request, as the SELLER, the one in the control for the transaction. My next email to them? Plain and simple, “Deal off.” Second buyer, whom I’m still dealing with, same issue, not quite giving me, his paypal email, until I got strick with him. They ACTUALLY used a phishing account to send me a “email payment confirmation”. It looks similar to the Paypal emails, but enough differences that I could definitely tell that something’s up. One was the different font used, two was the layout, three was the fact that it said “Hello candymarie@gmail.com,” not my name, like Paypal emails always have. SO, after finally getting their email, I sent the invoice, clearly stating what the invoice was for, camera with shipping charges. I wrote back to them as well: “There invoice has been sent, you should have received it by now, I shall be checking the status via MY paypal page, and do NOT tell me to just go ahead and ship the item because the money is on hold, because I checked my account, and there is no pending status at all. No indication that you sent anything, and no, it is NOT for both of our protection, because that is utter crap. It doesn’t work that way with eBay, it doesn’t that way with me. Now stop stalling, because you were certainly rushing me with responses.Want the camera? Confirm your payment.” Harsh yes, but this is just getting ridiculous. If this happens to be real, great! If not, then I am heavily editing my ad to: I will NOT ship this item anywhere, you want it, we’ll meet up, so you want me to mail it to Nigeria? Screw you! Lol. Has this happened to any of you? OH! Here's an update! Got his response before I posted this, so here it is!!: "Hello Is like you are trying tO fraud me,i had made the payment to you but you refused to ship the items to the designated address after you have received the payment confirmation from paypal which is against the paypal rules and terms of conditions and in most the Laws of United State. If you dont want me to take a legal action against you as an UN diplomatic officer,You have to ship the item to the designated address within the next 12 hours.Again the item is to be shipped to the beneficiary in Nigeria and the address is as shown below: Bashiru Ismaheel 30,IJEUN STREET,ITOKU, ABEOKUTA,OGUN STATE. NIGERIA.234-039 BE WARNED.................." LMAO!!! I wish I could post my response before his response into more detail, but I unfortunately have to admit that I was cussing...a LOT! lol

Make sure that you will get the payment first ebfore you ship the item. I've heard a lot of stories like this. Recently, I know someone who is selling items in craigslist for a laptop for $870. The seller shipped the item to Nigeria but it was too late that he found out that he had been scammed. The money didn't post into the sellers PayPal account. Craigslist doesn't have anything that you helps the seller and the buyer to check if that is a valid transaction or not. It is still better to post your items on eBay.

Hi, uh, yeah, I know it's a scam. And I didn't post on eBay just because I was trying to sell locally anyways. He's not sending the money, otherwise he would have done so already. Thanks for responding and happy myLotting! Next time read the whole discussion before just skimming through it please, CHEERS!

That's why I'm kind of hesitant to do much on Craig's List. I've mainly had experiences in the dating sections (Hey, at the time I figured it couldn't hurt lol). I think of all the people I have ever contacted or contacted me were nothing but spam bots. I think of all the attempts I made only two were real people. Everyone else wanted me to join websites to talk to them. That's why I don't like Craig's List as much as I want to. There are way to many scammers and things like that on the site. I mean, no doubt there are a lot of legit people on there too but unfortunately I never met many of them. I hope you do find a real buyer for you camera though. I might at least try selling things on there some day. I'd rather sell locally too if I could with the stuff I ever sell.

Well that's the thing, I always assumed that craigslist was meant for locally things, because they have different pages for each city. And the main parts of the site I like to visit is the Free Stuff, pets, electronics, toys and games, and SOMETIMES the events section, for any volunteer stuff like for concerts and festivals. Thanks for responding and happy mylotting!

I can KIND of understand how people can not want to post on ebay, mainly because when they sell something, a percentage goes to eBay, that's how they get their funding, amoung other things. But they could have used paypal, AND, paypal would be keeping track of it, and help you make any fraud charges if it warrants it. They would look after you, you would have just needed email address, but since you were doing the buying YOU would create the invoice, and any responds from the other party, check the paypal account status page first. That's the crap I had to do with the dumb Nigeria person. Who knows if they were even from Nigeria too? lol

Trade via the internet can have its moments! I dont trade much on the internet, have done so just the once or twice. But I had a funny incident too. I contacted a fellow coin collector somewhere on the internet( maybe through mylot, dont remember now) in order to exchange coins.. He was from Brazil. We finalised which coins I would send him and which ones he would send me in return. So, I pack the coins all nice and neat and to a private courier to post. The lady there calmly weighs the package and says 2900Rs(thats a lot of money for something like exchanging coins). I blurt out 'what?!'. The good lady was kind enough not to laugh at me. I just picked the package of coins and left. But, I now understand thats what international couriers cost(If only I knew!) I did buy some erstwhile yugoslavain notes from E-bay with my lone mylot payout. I reckon one just has to be that much more careful on the net. Well, I wish you happy commerce on the net!

Yes, the weight did increase the cost. Also, the government of India does not allow the sending of coins to other countries, but the private couriers dont mind sending them. I think the good old way of going to the market to sell and buy is the most charming form of trade, but one has to change with the times. Its internet today, tomorrow you might just teleport your camera to nigeria!

Oh my goodness! That is a lot of money to send coins internationally! I can only assume though that it also weighted quite a bit right?

I sure did! I forwarded their "official paypal notification email" directly to "spoof@paypal.com" and paypal responded saying that yes, it is a phishing account. So they have been reported. I even told the guy in response that I did so, and if he wants, I'd be more than happy to forward him the responded email. And I volunteered he forward my email as well to the same email address. Last I heard of him lol. Thanks for responding and happy myLotting!

Craigs list is too easily used to scam people. There's little to no protection for anyone trying to use it. Nigeria has become one big scam!

My husband was actually selling some music equipment thing and he wanted me to post it on craigslist. So I did, got a response back saying, along the lines of, he wanted it, and if he could mail us a certified bank check to our home. He does not live in the area, but he has a mover that could come pick it up for him. ok what would be the first thing that pops into your head? Well like I said I posted it for my husband, at first he was all for it til I told him about the mover part, my response to my husband was yea, his "mover" will come pick it up, along with the rest of our stuff in our home? I don't think so. I replied to the guy, where do you live I will come drop it off myself... Never had a response after that. I will say from that point on I have not messed with cl, to many scams on it now.

haha, yeah Anything that involves moving it, with a separate payment visit? Heck no! Good for you! But don't let that discourage you from craigslist please! It's still good for other items and such...I found a cheap air purifier on there and love it! Well Thanks for responding and Happy myLotting!

There are scams everywhere. My daughter had a puppy to sell and a person in Illinois want it for his son. he claimed to be blind but wanted her to send the puppy to him. He sent her a check for much more than the cost of the puppy and the cost of sending the puppy. After much emailing back and forth and him wanting her to cash the check and give the left over to a friend at a motel. she decided it was a scam and took the check to the sheriff's office. t did turn out to be a scam and it was herein the states. Some people just think everyone is stupid.

!!! Someone tried to do something similar to me when I was trying to sell my car! I didn't see any sign of this check though, but he mentioned, "I fired the secretary who made such a big mistake in sending you too much money!"...OR, you can cancel the check, and chill? Sorry to hear that happened. Thanks for responding and happy myLotting!

Oh no you better send it or god knows what will happen you might have the whole UN diplomacy office in your house in 12 hours to come and shoot you.. I meam honestly does anyone fall for this???? If someone sends an item after this they need help
• Canada
15 May 09
I know right? But I mean, it's the same everywhere, get the money first, THEN send the item, I told them if they are so desperate for a camera that's not even new, and is willing to spend up to 240 USD additional (still all fake) just go to best buy or futureshop, where a brand new camera is cheaper, and they'd get free shipping too lol.

There are so many of these scam things going around - whenever I get them, I send them right back and say: 'Your correspondence has been placed in the hands of the Australian Federal Police.' They can take that whichever way they like!

lol I'm sorry but I cant help laughing at such a ridiculous threatening note! But I'm glad you had the sense of checking things out before you shipped your product. Generally when you're dealing with selling stuff online its best to deal locally or if its internationally only deal with countries that have a vast online presence. Now Nigeria is one country that EVERYONE should avoid. Don't visit there (believe me its no paradise there), don't deal with anybody from there as they are all scam artists and con artists. When it comes to anything online the second I hear the word Nigeria it end there as that is one nation that is so untrustworthy, the people are so aggressive, so avoid anything to do with Nigeria! (That goes for all you my lotters!)

Some people will really take advantage of you in whatever way they can think of and will even attempt to test your intelligence. I really hate those kinds of people. Makes me want to do Sadako (or Samara) on them through the computer screen and just give them a good punch or pull their hair hard. You really have to be careful when you buy or sell your items online.
• Canada
11 May 09
Haha, (samara) too true! I call him/her/them on the bull$hit so many times, and they just kept trying to convince me that I'll be the one in trouble. I told him to go right ahead with his "legal action", I would gladly accept his attempted challenge, because I have proof of everything that he is a scam artist, and since he is one, I knew he wouldn't go through with anything. I told my coworker, that is he responded to my last email, I'll give him my work number, and tell him to call me. lol Thanks for responding and happy myLotting.

Its stuff like this that makes me very very careful. I ONLY deal locally, and I request a phone number and meet in a public place and I never go alone. Its just silly to think that there are people in the world that are that hell-bent on getting something they didnt pay for, or doing harm to someone trying to make a legitimate sale. The first thing I tell my "sale-partner" to do is get a license plate number from the car driven to the meet up. I know its might sound silly, but if someone tries to do something stupid, at least I have that much to go on when I call the police. Gotta be careful these days. But speaking of Nigeria sales...I was working at a clothing store for a while and I got a phone call from an IP Relay operator (supposed to be phone calls for the deaf that can be done over the internet, like a TTY online, which is cool) anyway, they have to relay whatever is typed and this loser was trying to buy 30 sweaters over the phone to have them sent to Nigeria. HONESTLY...who the heck needs 30 sweaters...IN NIGERIA!?! Anyway, the supervisor interrupted and said that it was more than likely a scam and that I could continue with the call and make the sale if I chose to but that they recommend just hanging up. I hung up. How crazy is that???

Those are VERY good things to do, especially when you are meeting someone you don't know. I actually did the same thing, get the license plate number of the guy I went on a date with, and told my roommates and friend that if they don't hear from me by a certain time, to call the police. And yeah, the phone call sounded awfully silly, glad you chose to hang up. Thanks for responding and happy myLotting!
