Are there copyrights on titles?

I just thought of an interesting title for a novel I would like to write after the one I am currently working on is finished. In fact the whole idea of the novel came from the title. Well, I googled it just to see if there is a novel with that title and lo and behold there is. It's a Stephen King novel, which is nothing like the story I plan on writing, so I was wondering can you use a title that is already in use by another author, with a totally different story, and it is a normal everyday word?

Usually, you might have to get permission to use the title if you really want it.

After I posted this I did a search using ask and oddly enough someone recently asked the same question and I found a link to copyright information. ANd titles and phrases and slogans cannot be copyrighted. So I guess i could use it, but I'll see once I begin the story later this year. It might take on a name for itself then and the original just be an inspiration. Who knows. Thanks
