I was wondering if I am artist? When we become an artists?

Its nurturing me this question, as because I have been laughed out by my mum, she told me I am not artist because I am not famous and etc.. I said I am an artist in my mind, soul and entire life., but she didn't took it... I am disappointed... Can anyone help me to describe a common definition of artist? Any hints will be helpful.
