Question for the Health Nuts out there

My husband and I were talking about trying to eat healthier foods, like whole grain and high fiber foods, but I am having some trouble finding things that also taste good. We are not looking to loose weight, but just increase certain nutrients into our foods. We both love our veggies, but don't know much about whole grains and all those natural products. I am trying out one of those Kashi frozen meals (got a coupon for a free one last week) and its nasty! ilk... the pasta almost has a cardboard like texture to it. Any suggestions on some healthy yet tasty substitutes when it comes to Pasta, bread, and whatever other things you can come up with?

I recently began a quest very similar to yours! I have definitely found some things that are just terrible! But there are some good products out there as well. Try using Fiber One pancake mix. It tastes just like regular pancakes! I asked my husband if he they tasted like regular pancakes when I first made them. He looked at me and said 'They're not?' I knew then that I had a winner! I havent tried any of the other Fiber One products, but I have heard some good things about many of them. Lender's makes some whole wheat bagels that are pretty tasty. They are the only brand that I found that makes bagels that actually use whole wheat flour for the entire thing! I found them in the freezer at the grocery store. One of the simplest ways to get some whole grains with your meals is to cook brown rice. There are also some good recipes out there that use bulgar. If you make your own cookies or sweets or even breads, it is easy to increase the whole grains. It sometimes takes a little bit of experimentation, but if you use half whole wheat flour and half all purpose flour, the baked goods usually still come out quite tasty! Good luck!

Fiber One pancakes, I will have to give that a try. I have never had brown rice before...I'm a bit scared to try it. I am hispanic and had white rice growing up almost every day, but never brown. But hey, I'll give anything a try at least once =) Thanks for all the good advice!!

Brown rice really doesnt have much different of a flavor. Just be aware when you cook it that it will take longer to cook than regular white rice. (It also needs more water, but the package will tell you how much!)

I really like some of the new breads out. I am not sure which ones right off hand, but there are some that are very grainy with lots of flax seeds and very high fiber. I love to eat peanut butter or turkey on them.

try to have a balanced diet and include a part of everything you get. that's my style. don't eat too much of anything. just eat as if you are tasting a piece of it. my mother is fond of cooking and i have so much to eat that if i eat it all i will become a balloon in 1 day. keep exercising. and you can over eat on weekends. don't be too choosy about eating food, our body needs all the nutrients to function well and resist diseases.

Yea, I can never be a choosy person when it comes to food. I think all things in moderation is good. Thanks!
