Do you think it's right for children to be given detention? Isn't it ruining their social lives? Or have they already got one inside of school? WOULD you give a detention for forgetting the p.e shorts in their p.e kits? Personally - i think its pointless do you?

If those are the rules, then that is what should happen. You are in school to learn, and to participate. and if you forget the things that you need then you should be held accountable for that, If you get enough detentions for not remembering things..you are either going to start spending a lot of time in detention, or you are going to start remembering the things that you need.

I think teachers have every right to give detention, but i have to agree with what someone else said and say it does little good. Most kids dont care about sitting an hour after school and will probably act up again in detention. I think its a little harsh to be given detention for forgettign p.e. shorts but i bet is a good reminder not to do it again. And if its ruining their social lives then they need to do what they are supposed to and not get detention.

After spending one week in a jr high this semmester I think that some students are lucky that the state requires the schools to let them in. At the same time, I also saw punishments, like detention, that were pointless. As far as it ruining the student's social life, I hardly feel that a good social life is the purpose of going to school. If a student knows that something is rewuired and they do not bring it then yes a punishment is in order and if detention is what the school does then the student shoule just be thankful that they are in school instead of at work where back talking and showing up unprepared would get you fired. Besides all that the school year is almost out, if the student can;t remember by now what is needed for PE then you bet detention is needed. The rules have not changed all year. Take your supplies.

You know this has several aspects. First there must be some methods of building responsibilty in students. This is a quality that they will need throughout their lives to be successful in their jobs. I do think it is a touchy thing developing responsibility in a student. The "punishment" or method should produce the desired result and should be according to the offense. Perhaps some sort of "community service" inside the school would be a more appropriate tool when one forgets their gym shorts. there are plenty of methods, it's a matter of finding which one gets the best results for the student's benefit.
