Puppy Mills

I once saw on Animal Planet, Animal Cops: Philadelphia a story about Puppy Mills, and what I watched had me horrified. Yes, I knew about the puppy mills surrounding the Philadelphia area, however I did not realize just how bad or deplorable those conditions were. Without going into specifics (unless you all want to) there were two individuals that should have received jail time instead of just fines. For each occurance of animal cruelity, they only had to pay a fine of $25-50 dollars each. One man only had a grand total of 9 such occurances. Nine!!! Out of more than 600 cases. There has to be better laws to help these poor animals. I now no longer go into a pet store without first researching as much as I can to see just where they get their puppies. I go to a pet store that deals directly with the breeders themselves. Does anyone else agree?

I saw the same episode of Oprah, and it made me sick! I can't understand why someone would be so cruel to gain a buck! If we did these things to humans we would be put in jail, so I can't see why if you do this to animals the punishment isn't the same. After seeing this episode of Oprah I no longer will buy any animal at a pet store, I go to the local shelter and adpot there. I think that it's great if you do your research on buying any pet, you never know! We need to be their voices and speak out about this matter!

I happen to agree with you on this. I won't even go to a pet shop unless they can show me the breeders from which they get their dogs. In fact, I got my new puppy from a pet store that only deals with breeders. The owner told me that his two emploees would not only not work for him if he bought his dogs from a puppy mill, but that they would turn him in to the police.... Talk about incentive not to buy from puppy mills...

I have seen an episode on Oprah about it and its really horrifying to see how these dogs are treated. They are not provided with proper shelter, some of them aren't even allowed to go out of their cages. It would really make you think twice about getting a pet from pet stores that are not reputable. The proper authorities should be vigilant in imposing the necessary punishments to those individuals who are running these puppy mills.

When was the Oprah segment aired. I noticed that the puppy mill breeders neglected to properly feed and/or water their dogs and new puppies. The conditions in the cages were so bad that some of the dogs were either blind or they were left to die. There were cases of puppies dying and the owner didn't even bother to get rid of the carcuses. Also these same owners took the dogs who no longer could breed or were no longer a use and took the out back in the woods and just shot them... Let's discuss this important topic.... I know for the animal lover out there, this must horrfy us all.... Let me know your thoughts...

I have to say that I don't buy any animal from a pet store. I go straight to the breeder. I then research the breeder and the facility and then visit the facility. I make sure that the people are nice and friendly and then I check and see if they have a warranty and how their adoption applications are. Pet stores cost way to much because you are going through a middle man that you're not sure if they are getting their pets from a breeder or a puppy mill. I have to say I don't like going into pet stores that much any more unless I'm buying feed or fish. I don't have to get fish so I'm good.

Absolutely. I feel the same as you and believe that any pet store owner that buys from a puppy mill ought to have their license revoked. I am glad that our governor has passed an even tougher law that makes it manditory for those puppy mills to have to go through more rigorous inspections. However, I believe that they should be disbanded all together. Thanks for your imput.
